14/15 for me. As with a lot of others on here I got the very last number sequence wrong.
Thanks for posting this OP! My mum used to get me lots of logic puzzle workbooks when I was young and I enjoy using a different part of my brain than normal

If it helps anyone, it's easy to get flustered with the apparent complexity of the problem but this one is actually trivially easy to work out once you spot the patterns in the variations.
If you recognise that the second letter of each coded word is either an A or an E (as opposed to the three possibilities for each of the other three code positions), then it's a pretty quick trial and error substitution to find out which is which. Try for example 5326 with 3 = A. This would mean that 2 is either L or S, which doesn't fit with the others. (6245 wouldn't match any other word.)
Once you realise that 3 = E, then you don't need to do any more. All you need to do is substitute E = 3 into the possible answers: STEEL can only be 45331 and TASTE can only be 52453.

Still dont get it.
Your explanation seems to have more speculation than logic. Can someone logically explain this....frustrated that i only got 13/15 and still cannot understand how to do this. Cracked the others very quickly. 0 -
It is logical, but there's more than one way of doing it. The first letter of steel must be either 2 or 4, as those are the only digits in the third place in the 4 letter words. So the code for Steel must start with 4. Only one of the codes does this. Once you have Steel, the other word is easy.:D0

I passed too [as I did 40+ years ago], but the real question is......what are we all doing subscribing to this site if we were told we were such a bunch of whizzkids back then? As for Grammar schools? I live in area where they still exist and all they seem to do is perpetuate arrogance and misplaced elitist illusions.

Have to disagree but that is because in NI there are still so many Grammar Schools, I think that is the problem that once the 11+ goes and some sort of 'comprehensive' system comes in then Grammar schools become more about who can afford to pay the high fees for the few that remain and who can pay for extra tutoring to get the kids through the entrance exams!0 -

9/15 -- I used to be intelligent -- dont' see the point of those exercises, and the questions are badly explained to be honest. How can you judge kids on that ?0

It's about that NOW!!!!
Fortunately my DD is extremely gifted so needed no tuiton.
However there are many bright kids who aren't tutored who don't pass, simply because it is a system they are not used to and therefore cannot do 2 x 80 question papers in 100 minutes.
On the other hand there are kids coming out of year 6 with 4 and below in their SATS who are passing the 11plus with flying colours because their parents have paid to tutor them
I said this in my last post I'm sure. My 10 year old son has a better grasp of English and maths than most year nine girls in my DD's grammar school. My DED was the only girl in her class NOT tutored.
I know the rich and status obsessed will disagree, but it is a fact I am afriad.I can be brown I can be blue I can be violet and sky. I can be hurtful I can be purple I can be anything you like..Gotta be green gotta be mean gotta be everything more...0
