May i add that different counties and schools have different pass marks.
My daughter took her 11+ this year in september we got the results end of october to find she was only one who passed. The pass rate at her grammar school is 220 out of 280 and this was over 2 papers. A verbal reasoning and a non verbal reasoning. There were 500 girls who took this exam and only 150 spaces. It is also in the top 10 of the east midlands so rather hard to get into. This year though for the first time ever not enough passed and they were actually ringing round families whose children were close and asking them to appeal to go before aboard to put their point across to get their child in. This apparently had never happened before
Yet another example of how education standards have dropped so dramatically under this government.
It's also a fact, many kids coached for grammar have both parents working. Therefore although they should pass the 11 plus easily due to tuiton, they often have very poor standards in other ways due to lack of time spent with them
I gave up work when I had mine. (No, not rich, hubby earns 15K a year and it was only 10k when our DD was born in 94, but I WANTED to be at home with my children)
As a result I could walk to school each way ( beneficial to learning rather than arriving full of CO fumes and no money on petrol!) talk to and interact with my kids on the way, do all the parent/children courses at school, have time to read, play and learn thru play with them. Also went on all school trips etc with them
Worth far far more than a new dress, shoes, nights out, nice hair dos etc etc
yes we go on holiday several times a year, but I've never needed to spend money on myself. So long as we have a nice home good food and the kids have proper shoes and decent clothes and a few hols thats all that matters.
And that time with the kids has been crucial. Never regretted it, and if I HAD worked and HAD regretted it, would have been too late now.
More paents should push aside their luxuries and spend more quality time with their kids instead of bunging them with tutors and after school clubsI can be brown I can be blue I can be violet and sky. I can be hurtful I can be purple I can be anything you like..Gotta be green gotta be mean gotta be everything more...0 -
It's about that NOW!!!!
Fortunately my DD is extremely gifted so needed no tuiton.
However there are many bright kids who aren't tutored who don't pass, simply because it is a system they are not used to and therefore cannot do 2 x 80 question papers in 100 minutes.
On the other hand there are kids coming out of year 6 with 4 and below in their SATS who are passing the 11plus with flying colours because their parents have paid to tutor them
I said this in my last post I'm sure. My 10 year old son has a better grasp of English and maths than most year nine girls in my DD's grammar school. My DED was the only girl in her class NOT tutored.
I know the rich and status obsessed will disagree, but it is a fact I am afriad.
Well, when I did 11+ (admittedly 20yrs ago!! ) there were very few who needed or got any tutoring because all the primary schools did the practice papers and taught how to do the papers in the run up to sitting the test.
Are you in NI? IMO because there are so many grammar schools the pressure is not the same as it is in England, more children are able to attend a grammar school because they don't have to pay the high fees that the few remaining ones in England charge. There is not the same stigma attached to attending a grammar (or secondary) school because it is just accepted as the way things are.
I know more kids now are getting tutoring than what they used to but I also have discussed at length with friends about it and my views are the same...if they need excessive tutoring then they shouldn't go to grammar schools!!
My aunt is a teacher in a comp in England, she sees our schooling system and for years has said how well it works, how much better the schools are and she knows from her side that she cannot give the pupils in her school what they need~none benefit because the more intelligent cannot get the push they need to keep them interested and the less intelligent cannot get the extra help they need to understand...only the few that are in the very middle of the range are getting the education they need.
Also I think the fact that schooling is then based on the area you live is ridiculous....where we live now my closest primary schools are terrible!! Go a mile up the road and there are much better schools. The closest to us are all secondary schools, half a mile further and there are 2 all girl grammar and a boys grammar school....I would hate to think that my DD would end up in the (ok but not great) secondary rather than the much better grammar just because of a half mile!0 -

Sailed through this (shame I live in wales so couldn't have gone to grammar school anyway) but just didn't understand that last one, please please can you explain x0 -
16, 17, 18, 18, 20, 19, ____
21 23 22 20
This one??
Look at the alternate numbers so 16/18/20 and 17/18/19.
One set are going up in twos the other in ones
the missing number is part of the first set that goes up in twos so answer is 22.
that make any sense??0 -
no not in northern ireland, in the north west! But they appear top tutor everytwhere, as I visited an 11 plus website before my DD took the exam, and the people on there were saying "You have to tutor for 2 years or you have no chance of passing!"
That said, most were snobs with more money than sense
Fortunately I also ignored them, and as I said my DD got 98% with no tuiton!I can be brown I can be blue I can be violet and sky. I can be hurtful I can be purple I can be anything you like..Gotta be green gotta be mean gotta be everything more...0 -
Totally agree. I actually go further and say if they need ANY tutoring they shouldn't be going to grammar. hat's exactly what I have said previously in my posts.I know more kids now are getting tutoring than what they used to but I also have discussed at length with friends about it and my views are the same...if they need excessive tutoring then they shouldn't go to grammar schools!!
All they should require is some familiarisation with the papers, ie give them a few old ones to have a practise with. Only because of the time aspect.I can be brown I can be blue I can be violet and sky. I can be hurtful I can be purple I can be anything you like..Gotta be green gotta be mean gotta be everything more...0 -
by the way I moved mine from our nearby primary to one 3 miles away and walked there with them every day as it was MILES better. My 10 yr old is still there and we still walk. Like I said, being a hands on parent gives me the time to do that, plus it's very healthy for us and he will perform better at school after walking there.
Shouldn't matter where you live. DD's grammar school is only a 2 mile walk but she could have gone to one 10 miles away no problem if she'd wishedI can be brown I can be blue I can be violet and sky. I can be hurtful I can be purple I can be anything you like..Gotta be green gotta be mean gotta be everything more...0 -
Woo - got 15 out of 15 with 3mins 44 secs left on the timer. But then I did do maths at uni so should have expected to get them all right I guess :-D0
