Do remember how lucky you are to be able to claim overtime; it is an expectation in my job and for my staff, that you are "professional" so work the hours needed... I should work a 36hr week, I usually work 46-50hrs unless I also have to travel long-haul at the weekend or go to Middle East (typically can work 13days without a day off). So you can see why I never recalculate what my hourly rate really is
Good to hear of all the OPs, you've really got something to show for your extra effort at work.
I should work 36 hours a week.
It is also an expectation in my job to work the hours needed.
Extra hours worked during the week (Monday to Saturday) are never paid as overtime, just like the 3 hours extra I worked yesterday to sort out someone else's mess, or the 46 hour week I worked a fortnight ago.
Sundays and Bank Holidays are special and if I am asked to work, I get paid double time or can request 2 days off in lieu of payment, or single time and a day off.
I take up options depending on what suits my needs.0 -
It is certainly more apparent that we're working more hours so why is it claimed productivity is low in UK compared to EU?
I think it may be that we manufacture less and less, but do more and more services, financial (well we did!), consultancy and R&D work (plus media and other exports) which I think are more difficult to assess than factory output?
Roll on the MF date and DD leaving home, maybe then I can change my working hours or even retire early..0 -

You're certainly right, and I wish I had the answer.
Once I'm mortgage free, I'll definitely be changing my working hours.

Last weekend I completed my Race For Life 5K event in torrential rain and the course was very hilly.
The hill at 4K nearly finished me off.
I am signed up for a 10K run in September because a colleague at work bet me that he would finish ahead of me if we both took part in the same race.
The fact that he is male, and several years younger, didn't even enter my head. I'm up for the challenge and the whole store has taken an interest, and they've set up a sweepstake of finishing times.
Like I told him.
"If you win, it would be expected and no great shame for me BUT
If I win, you will have been beaten by an old woman (who also happens to be your boss), and you will never be allowed to forget it."
Neither of us has run 10K, so we both have work to do.
I been on the DFW Running Club thread getting advice.
I just need to crawl past the finishing line before he does.0 -
I've been asked to work this Sunday evening, which will add another £120 to August's overpayments.
I should hopefully overypay £850 next month instead of the £750 planned.
I found out yesterday that it's going to be a bit hectic at work over the next month or so due to staff sickness/holidays which means I have to look after another department (which is in a right mess  ) as well as my own.
Sometimes the only reward for being good at your job is picking up the cr*p that the incompetent ones leave behind.
Right now, August 31st can't come soon enough.
My boss called me to his office earlier today and I thought it was just routine work stuff, when out of the blue he presented me with a very nice expensive bottle of wine. :j
He wanted to thank me for the hard work and improvements I have made to the department I've been looking after for the past month.
It made my day.0 -
Well done and what a lovely boss you have!
Good luck with the 10k. I started running 11 weeks ago and have now done 10k three times (although not competitively). Eleven weeks ago I couldn't even manage 5 minutes of a slow jog so it can be done.Mortgage start September 2015 £90000 MFiT #060 -

My boss can sometimes be a pain in the a**e, so it was quite a shock (although a nice one) for him to show his thanks in such a way.0
