hard sell from the banks

  • I'd like to see that, considering BarclaysManager has apparently worked in the industry for some time, whereas Inactive just plain doesn't like banks.
  • Because every customer has an in-depth knowledge of every product the bank sells.

Perhaps they dont but with the internet etc these days, we're all more aware.
At 1 out off approximately 6 reviews, they were able to match my buildings and contents insurance (call to callcentre from managers office).
I was genuinely going to change, asked them to send the information out and received nothing.

I hate being asked if i'd like a review EVERY time i enter a branch.

I DO know what my bank does that I'd trust them to do. Current account, savings account (for short term excess money before moving it elsewhere) and mortgage.

My loyalty? I keep these accounts with them. RBS. Interest rates are rubbish, mortgage rates aren't the best but I'm willing to keep with them as we would probably lose our local branck if we didnt use it.

Other savings account? HBOS online. ISA? self invested.

I've made more in the past 4 months self invested than the banks/financial advisors have ever made for me.

You lot are only fooling yourselves if you honestly think that I am the only person that doesn't have a lot of time for bankers these days.

Equally you are only deluding yourselves if you think that the banks are whiter than white in this huge mess we are in, sorry to tell you this, but most of the population hold the banks responsible.

More bank job losses today !!

Anyway you keep on patting each other on the backs, keep on supporting each other, someone may just fall for the crap that you dish out.

Here's an idea: stop being so emotional about this, put your misplaced and irrational anger to one side.

Then try actually answering what you've been challenged on. Still waiting for your answer about security write downs.

Honestly? I work for a bank. I need a job. And that job happens to be at a bank. I can't risk quitting on 'ethical' grounds. The pay is good and, at the end of the day, they treat me well and many of us have mortgages/rent to pay. Why should I feel guilty over something some big wigs did years ago?

    harumph!!

That's not an answer. You implied I was wrong about the role of UK banks in sub prime lending. So, quantify.

I also don't like being hassled at the counter for extra products as I like to do some research before making a decision and not in the space of 2 minutes in a branch.

I can recall the Whistleblower programme quite well and this only highlights another reason as to why counter staff shouldn't be selling extra services.

I have lost respect for the banks, as I'm sure you can tell. However, even if we weren't facing a credit crunch due to bank greed, I still don't think it's a Teller's job to sell to customers.

    You have two choices then.
    (1) Ask them to make a note on your marketing record NOT to sell at the counter to you or
    (2) Thank them for bringing products to your attention and tell them you would like to research the product in your own time.

Television documentaries will put a spin on the message they want to give. While I would agree that promotion of products and services should be professional and appropriate, I don't think staff should stop selling. Not many businesses survive without selling their products.

Yet market research says one of the things about banks that naffs them off most is that even though a customer visits a branch every week they were never told about products that would improve their financial position. Sometimes banks are damned if they do and damned if they don't. If the only interaction you have with a bank is the teller, how else are you going to find out about products and services that would improve your finances?
The key for you is to opt out if you don't like it.

The key for the banks is to train their people to promote options professionally and appropriately.
