Give them old notes, or Scots and Irish. See what they say then. ;)

  • "Yes, you really do have to write your sort code in. Yes, we do have more than one..."

I had someone abruptly ask me once if I could write the amounts in.

    ...no. No I can't.

Trying to get people to write in the cash breakdown bits on the slips is fun too. You can try and explain that it's for their protection should something bad happen to the credit, but that takes longer to say than "I don't want to, you do it" sadly.
Have you had the person yet who gets annoyed that you don't have £20,000 or some other ridiculous amount of cash ready to give to them right then and there?

We've had complaints because we've had no £50 notes...
And, as a former cashier myself, the "free samples" joke is what drove me up the wall the most.

That and the "cash" joke that Scousebird talks about. While I'm sure the people saying it only do so with good intentions, after 7 hours a day of hearing it, it does grate...

Also SB, we did have someone in once wanting gold bullion, believe it or not...

Please don't blame the bankstaff!!! they are given really high sales targets and get so much grief if they don't hit them!! its the higher up management that needs the complaint letters, the staff in the branch need a polite no thankyou not a barrage of abuse!!

I agree with that, however I have to confess to getting miffed by the constant defence by bank staff on here, apparently supporting this activity.

Surely they are not all so brain washed by their employers to think that customers welcome this intrusion.

BTW, I am never abusive to any member of staff at a bank, I am always courteous and polite, though they do try my patience at times.

And I'm sure you try theirs.

It's nothing to do with brain washing: it is the acceptance that asking is part of their job, and it's also the realization that not every customer is so high strung about it as you are.

Not at all, I am always polite and courteous, as I have said.

Clearly reading through this forum, there are many like me that are miffed with it, you and other bank staff on here obviously see things differently, possibly you have a vested interest that you wish to protect, I don't see any of you making critical comment about your employers devious tactics.

So I must presume that you condone this activity.

It seems to me that bankers are blind to the fact that the general public rightfully have lost a lot of respect for banks in general over recent months, I would have hoped that putting a stop to this dubious activity, they may have started to build up some of the trust that they have clearly lost.

BTW, I am not " highly strung " about anything, I am just expressing my views, which obviously do not concur with yours.

Even people who are polite and courteous can still be trying. :)

Really? On a website that advocates charges/PPI reclaiming... there are people who aren't best friends with the banks? Well strike me down.

This site is clearly a clear and true cross section of society as a whole.
...you and other bank staff on here obviously see things differently, possibly you have a vested interest that you wish to protect, I don't see any of you making critical comment about your employers devious tactics.
Because there are no devious tactics at play. It's usually a simple question or proposition; there's nothing devious about that at all.
So I must presume that you condone this activity.
Do I condone bank staff doing their jobs? Do I condone banks conducting business in a free and open market, as they are legally free to do?

Yes, I do condone both of these.
It seems to me that bankers are blind to the fact that the general public rightfully have lost a lot of respect for banks in general over recent months, I would have hoped that putting a stop to this dubious activity, they may have started to build up some of the trust that they have clearly lost.
Except it's only dubious in your opinion. If the majority of customers complained, of course we would stop - but, sorry to break it to you, they don't. So, obviously, you're of the minority who considers it dubious.

As has already been pointed out numerous times, it is a simple yes or a no. There are also plenty of times when the bank can either make or save you money. Be it through better interest, cheaper insurance, etc.

You may consider yourself some sort of connoisseur of the financial world, but not everybody does. Not everybody knows that they might be able to do better. Would you rather that we didn't try and save people money on their insurance, and let them pay more?
BTW, I am not " highly strung " about anything, I am just expressing my views, which obviously do not concur with yours.
So you're not high strung, yet you accuse the banks of conducting themselves in a dubious manner? That's quite a serious accusation, given the amount of regulation that they're under. In fact, it's not simply you saying "I don't like this practice, it annoys me", it's you outright defaming character. It's also called libel.

Yeah right, so tell your bosses to sue me for it then.:rotfl:

Oh and thank you for confirming that you condone this activity, no real surprise there, at least you cannot now lay the blame at your employers, you are as bad as them, in my book.
  • i don't understand all the fuss about this i now work in the banking industry after many years working in retail and i draw two comparisons.

when i go into my local superdrug and purchase anything the staff always ask me do i want any stamps or top-ups along with my purchases though i always politley decline .

in a bank or building society they do this because they have targets to just the same as your local shop . its all about added sales or x sales whatever you like to call them .

if your not interested just politely decline but remember there just doing there job.

in another case it may be relevant and you could get information about the product , and lastly it may be something of benefit to you that could either make or save you money.

which this forum is all about aswell :T

What I do, or don't do, is none of your business, you and others choose to tell the world that you are bankers, that is your choice.

However, this is a forum of people expressing their opinions, nothing more, nothing less, I have mine, which because of your vested interest, differ to yours and other bankers on here.

That does not make you right, or me wrong. As I havn't broken any forum rules, I will continue to express my opinion as I deem fit.

I do not need any banker to tell me how to behave, thank you.

Now may I suggest to you that if you do not like reading my posts, you are not obliged to.
