Feeling very pleased with myself I have just saved 118.74 a year on my building insurance! I shopped around and got the best deal I could including accidental damage. I've been slightly naughty and paid for it in one lump sum to save the interest by credit card, but this is only because it's such a long month, as soon as payday arrives I will pay that amount off the card. It's a safety thing :D

I'd been paying £25 a month in the mortgage repayments for the insurance and hadn't really noticed until I took control of my finances, how embarrassing is that? :o

I've started back on the payment a day challenge, to date I've paid off 1054.24 just with small amounts here and there, it's surprising how the little bits add up!

I'm also going to start a car account and put a little in this each month. I know that the car's going to cost at it's next MOT, so I'd like to get something by to help cover this. I can't afford a new car, so this will be the only way to ensure I have transport. Must change the breakdown cover as well.

Thanks mickey, I'm so pleased, the only thing is, I can't believe that I just let the mortgage company just stick any old amount on the repayments. It never occurred to me that you could get building insurance elsewhere!

I'll look into the clubcard/RAC deal, the AA are doing the basic for 29.00 with 17.00 back from Quidco. Actually, I'll go and look now! Do you think you can use clubcard points if you're an existing RAC customer?

Well done on the huge savings on the contents insurance, glad your new year is off to a good start. You finding the diary a big help then?

I am going to do something similair to you Piq and set aside a little car fund thing!! I have the mot and insurance due in April plus tax in May, so i want to be ready for whatever is thrown at me.

You can no longer use clubcard deals for RAC membership, the quidco offer is really good though and i used that last time.

Hiya andan, are you keeping well? very happy new year to you!

The diary is really helping, especially if I do the money saving entries in blue, I can quickly check back to see what I've done and when! The car is worrying me a bit, hence the extra account for it, the car is quite elderly and although it's been fantastic to date, there's escaping the fact it's now 14 years old

I've just been on the clubcard site and bought the breakdown cover with points, it didn't come up with any message to say it had been cancelled. If it has I'll do the AA one through Quidco.

hello pebblespop (absolutely brilliant name, by the way)

The recipe is really easy and incredibly cheap and cheerful! Here it is:
    • Peel and slice as many potatoes as you want - depending on how many people it's for etc
    • Peel and slice a couple of onions
    • Grate plenty of strong cheddar
    • Start with a layer of potato then a layer of onion, and carry one until you're either bored or run out of space in the dish, but make sure the top layer is made up of potato
    • Make up about half a pint of vegetable stock, I use maigold boillion (sp?) and pour it over the potato and onion mix
    • Top with grated cheese and bake for about 40 minutes until the top layer of potatoes is crispy and the underneath soft and the stock has been absorbed
    • Enjoy!

Maybe their cancelling the break down soon, just remember someone on mse mentioning it yesterday and how they couldn't get rac membership anymore. Great that you have though.

My car is also 14years old. Its only had one previous owner and done 53000 miles, but i have been using it full time since i passed in Aug so am aware there may be more probs with it now. Although as much as i love her, if she did have probs i would question whether it was worth keeping her, as the care only cost £460.

I don't have anything put aside to get a newer car, and to be honest, I don't really want to at the moment. I'd have to get some sort of credit and that defeats what I'm trying so hard to achieve at the moment. Apparently, it will need some sort of work on it's underneath parts (oh vicar ) other than that it's relatively sound. Fingers crossed...

...and I remembered to cancel the RAC direct debit, so there shouldn't be any accidents:rolleyes:
