It's not rocket science, so why don't I get it?

If it’s not rocket science, then why don’t I get it? I need to spend less than I earn….not mention clearing all my debts...
Having rashly said I’d start a diary if a fellow DFW did, I find myself having to start the journal. Actually it was KT Jazz, who has produced the most inspiring list of things she wants to do before she’s 30, amazing girl…
I’ve lost the plot a little on the spending front. I’ve happily had a monthly fix paying off a chunk of the scariest of the credit cards, but not considered what I’m supposed to live on for the rest of the month! Yes, I know this shows I’m not too bright! But you do have to give me enthusiastic! This has culminated in a £25 bank charge. I need to be more realistic about what I can afford or have an unknown relation leave me a lot of money….
I find myself in tumultuous times; work is insecure, there are redundancies everywhere around me, and, indeed, the company is currently looking at the worth my own area brings to the bottom line. I owe a fortune in credit card debt, and I haven’t even owned up to the loan yet! And to top it off, my Eastenders style love life is kicking off again….
Having signed up to the clear £20k by Christmas 09, I realise, I’ll probably fail quite dramatically as I have a huge commitment in the shape of a hairy self-opinionated horse. This guy costs me a fortune in fire-fighter donations. He is very adventurous and frequently has to be rescued from whatever predicament he’s got himself into! Hence, the fire-fighter fund! Having said that, he’s getting on a bit now and once he retires I’d like to get another horse, but still keep the lad on. Now that is truly expensive….. and this is why I have to get myself sorted out now…
I’ve managed so far to drop £2.5k off the debt since August and plan to clear the rest of the credit card debt within two years and this is where the journal comes in, I need a record to refer to and to be able to see what I've committed to and to see what I've achieved. I’ve made some good friends on MSE and I’m relying on them to help, nag and giggle at the silly things that happen along the way:
As a starter for one, I’ve got my spreadsheet up to date, it’s ugly, but accurate…

Piq, give yourself a break!!! We can all get a bit gung ho at this debt clearing lark. I've been doing payment a day for the last couple of weeks and then realised I have christmas coming up! Doh!
The journal is an excellent idea. And we'll all be here with the proverbial kicks up the bum to keep you in shape!
And of course you have to keep the horse...he gives you hugs when you're having a bad day!

Times are, indeed, tumultuous, piq, and it is even more important, when times are bad, to try to keep on top of your debt.
£2.5k since August is pretty dammned good in anybody's book, though, and things will improve - eventually.

Thank you KT and Miss Piggy, and of course, Intergalatic Floozie - fantastic name :rotfl:
I'm glad I'm not the only one who's a little too enthusiastic about overpaying the debts. I'm not overpaying anything until the new year now as I have no spare cash and too much leftover month. But heaven help the debts come January, ebay here I come....

Thank you Cady, kind words indeed
Hi andan :hello:thanks for popping in, have a virtual biscuit!
Well I've managed to locke myself out of my on-line credit card account and I don't have the number with me so I can't get it released. As this is the account I regularly overpay on, this is the figure I wanted most - very very frustrated:mad:
Went into my other credit card account and it's asking me for the tenth letter of my password, it doesn't have 10 letters! What's going on?....Think I will go and rant in a quiet corner somewhere....Total debt at October 2008: £67,213.30

GAH to the credit card online thingy!! How frustrating when these things get thrown at us - do they not realise we have challenges to complete
Up until August, I was hit with bank charges every single month, because I was not realistic in what I needed to keep BEFORE I started making overpayments...........since I became more honest with myself about things, I have managed not to incur any bank charges or late fees etc at all, which is very good if you knew my past track record.
So, my saving grace has been to buy a separate diary - one page a day, but handbag size, where every day i write in my current balances, what still has to go out, what is still due in (eg quidco cash, mystery shopping money) etc, so I can see at any point what my shortfall is, or whether I can afford to make an overpayment that day.
It really has helped - I am pants at keeping a spending diary or a spreadsheet, but this diary thing works really well for me.
It is all about finding what works for you - give something a try and if it doesn't work, ditch it and don't get stressed about it. If it does work, then stick with it!Successful women can still have their feet on the ground. They just wear better shoes.
