  • Goodness.

I've just returned to this thread.

I wasn't expecting any responses to my 'rant' !!!

    But I was wrong!!!

However, I'm still deeply concerned that Brown didn't mention his £10 billion black hole, is pumping all this extra money into family-friendly policies (already discussed) and OAP-friendly policies (i.e. council tax rises/winter fuel allowance) and, as usual, nothing for me or my wife for the 8th year on the run.

Reading between all the lines, it now looks like Brown is taking a huge economic gamble - he's hoping that incomes will increase (thanks to increased oil prices) and that GDP will be substantially higher than most economic analysts are forecasting.  Does he know something that every economic analyst doesn't??

Of course, if he get's it wrong, then there's 2 options:-

    a) Stop spending
    b) Increase taxes by 3%

I'm pretty sure I know which option he will take and that's going to cost me a fair old wedge each year.  And why?

Do I use the schools?  No
Have I used the firemen?  No
Have I used the police?  No
Have I used the hospitals?  No - In fact, I have to pay twice for this - once to the government, once to private
What about my pension?  Not used it yet but the government's raided it anyway
Do I use the local council?  Yes - they empty my bins at a cost of over £1000 per year.  In fact, they even charged me an additional £20 this year so that I could have a new garden waste bin.  Thanks.

So - in summary, I'm really not very happy >:(
    Mortgage Feb 2001 - £129,000
    Mortgage July 2007 - £0
Original Mortgage Termination Date - Nov 2018
    Mortgage Interest saved - £63790.60
    ISA Profit since Jan 1st 2015 - 98.2% (updated 1 Dec 2020)

You have used the schools if you were educated yourself.
The rest is nothing to do with if you have children or not

I didn't get a choice in that unfortunately. My parents decided to have me. There's nothing I can do to change that. I was merely referring to whether the adult version of me has used any of these facilities.

Your taxes also contribute to other services your local council provide beside refuse collection and schools:

Social Serivces. You never know when you might need them. If you have an accident that leaves you perm/temp disabled they will help with homecare.

Education and Life long learning. This includes adult education classes and libraries. They are all there for you to use.

    Enviroment. : wow loads here
    Abandoned Vehicles
    Animals
    Building Control
    Cleaning and Litter
    Commercial Waste
    Commons Registration
    Composting
Food - cafe, pubs, restaurants etc.
Health and Safety Inspections public premises i.e. shops
    Local Land Charges
    Pest Control
    Planning
    Pollution
    Problem Hedges
    Recycling
    Rubbish Collection
    Trading Standards
    Tree Preservation Orders
    Waste Services

Culture and Recreation. This will cover parks, theatres, leisure centres.

Highways. Roads building and maintenance. Public highway lighting

    Burials and cremations

You may not have used all the services yet but I think you will be surprised at how many you use without realising. You never know when you will need the fire service - but you will be glad they are there when you do.

It is right that those fit and able to work support those who are not. What I object to are lazy good fornothings who have never worked and have no intention of doing so claiming all the lousy benefits going.

I am a parent I also managed to work. Not easy but possible. How some of you ask. I went part time. I had no family to help so had to pay childcare costs - for which there were no benefits. For 10 years I have worked 2.5 days per week. I now have free days in school term time but no money to play. In the school holidays I swop with friends who also work part time.

My earnings enable the participation in out of school activities and an annual summer holiday. If I worked full time we would have a better standard of living materialistically i.e. new furniture, new carpets, new clothes and new (please please) car but kids need their mum. They remember the time you spent with them usually on free activities like visiting the park with a picnic or going to mother and toddler groups. Funny they don't talk much about day care!

I know what you mean about council tax - we feel exactly the same.

We live in Shepway which had the highest increase in the UK and eventually was capped by the government (makes a change!) but it is still over £1000 a year for bin emptying.........

Whenever you ring the police about anything they're not interested.

It well and truly is Rip Off Britain! >:(
