Board Title Change & Note from Martin

To clarify, my point about face saving wasn't that anyone backed down or didn't. It's that everyone can realign their position without losing face.
That's how I understand that the idea of face works anyway.0 -
We'll all try to win another prize too. The boardmaster thingy......0

Maybe some different MSEers will come to this board and we will get a wider range of views - then we can even more vigourous debates.

Oh dear me no, I'm not about to start getting complaints about my illegibilty again am I
?
To try and get it before it starts I know I'm sometimes illegible. If you can't handle it, please just put me on ignore.
Its not unintelligence, nor dyslexia, I need no sympathy nor do I need to learn how to spell. I don't want pms telling me I should have gone to school nor to be dressed down (in anything other than good humour) for my writing by anyone other than Pastures who is allowed to with no ill feeling, and NDG who notices kindly if I'm sore or stressed.

ETA: and generali cos he is a good'un.0 -

My point was that the original post by Martin appeared to be hurried as the syntax and grammar were all over the place. Later on, substantial changes were made to the post so it made sense.
This wasn't a reference to your syntax, grammar, spelling, dress sense or anything else.
I like your posts and chatting with you one here. All that pedantic stuff isn't my thing as long as posts make sense. Language is about communication not point scoring as anyone who's tried seriously to use a second language will tell you!0 -

Oh dear one, I didn't think you were getting at me,:o  it just reminded me that this was likely to start again. I don't really mind too much when its done on open forum TBH anyway, I understand why it gets people's goats (it would have done mine in the past...although in the past I didn't use forums  ).
I know we are chums, you wombat.
I sometimes wish Pastures would log on as me and fix my posts as I go along..:o

Frankly I hadnt seen any of this until this morning. I liked the suggestion of widening the board remit and did it; the fact that it also provided a solution for some of the unpleasantness was an added bonus.
As for recriminations; why on earth would I want those. I want a smooth running board that people enjoy, learn from, and helps them. And my board guides and teh MSE team tend to do a great job at it; sometimes we hit understandable friction and then my job is to see whether there is an innate problem that i can solve or its just normal human interaction issues!

I really don't see the need for a name change in the first place. All of this has come about because a guide decided that something was off topic when it clearly wasn't. To save face you have had to rename the board. Of course the wider economy is relevant to house prices. You can't discuss house prices without referring to it.
This whole episode could have been handled much more effectively if the guide in question had made better decisions and had not decided to add fuel to the fire by running off to another board for support. That is something that cannot happen in the future.
I understand that it's not a good idea to publicly give the guide a talking to but I do hope that privately something is done. It's not about recriminations, it's about making sure the forum does run smoothly in the future. It won't if guides can get away with some of the stuff that happened over the weekend.
I love your work Martin. I love your site and everything you stand for. I'd be the first to defend you especially in places like HPC etc. However your post has annoyed me somewhat. You put the blame fully out the door of the general posting community when you know full well that there are two sides. In your initial post you talk about respect, again, don't those of us who visit your forum deserve the same respect?
Your volunteers were as much to blame as anyone yet this has been completely glossed over in a very one sided post.
This whole episode has been ridiculous. We're all agreed. But I think we all have to learn from it. Us posters have to learn to mellow out when it comes to guide's decisions. We have to be more tolerant.
But again, there are two sides. You should use this to learn a few things too. Having guides on a board that they know nothing about might be one lesson. Another might be to make sure guides are more grown up and don't go running to other boards to garner support and start a full on war. Perhaps, (and I know this goes against the idea that the guides are somehow omniscient and omnipotent, god like creatures that can do no wrong and deserve no blame) also have something to learn?
You say you want a smooth running board, "that people enjoy and learn from."
That's exactly what you had. Until yesterday. Does that not tell you something?
This is exactly the reason I'm so angry about this, we had a really nice board always dealt with interesting issues. Then it was ripped apart and yet, for some reason, it's us that are to blame? Us that get lectured about respect?
I don't think so.
The name change is a good way of diffusing the situation. It doesn't tackle what actually happened or stop it from happening again.
*EDIT* I just read through what I've written and it sounds a bit angry, it's actually more composed than that, so I hope it's taken as genuine feedback from a concerned poster rather than the rantings of an angry madman

Just to add; as this is a money saving site, there are all different views on certain economic situations and happenings at the moment.
There is thread elsewhere discussing shops / chains closing down....and it is evolving into a 'Grab a bargain when the store closes down' type discussion.
Others amongst us, have a different view on the economic consequences that these closures throw up....lost jobs, less competition (Tesco mopping up the bust businesses' trade for example) and all these little things add up to create a different economic environment...which feeds through to house prices etc.
There are differrent ways of looking at things and this board has a lot of depth when discussing, seemingly, off topic issues, but, most things connect some way or another.0
