Deceptive advertising

I went into Woolworths today after reading one of Martin's Money tips which says in bold type "50% off Woolworths", so naturally thinking everything was 50%, I spent my £5:00 on travel and went to Wollies.

As I approached the store I seen the same big bold advertisements "50% OFF ALL STOCK", so I went about my shop. After lifting a few items I noticed a marker on the shelves saying "10% OFF", "20% OFF" and initially thought the markers were out of date, but as I carried on through the store I began to take a closer look at the "50% OFF ALL STOCK" sign and noticed it actually said "up to 50% OFF ALL STOCK". :o

Let's just say I'm not a very happy MSE member, and after reading today's Sun, I see Halfords are at the very same trick on Sat Navs

Don't these companies know they are putting potential clients off? Maybe these companies are just in for the quick buck, hey?

Alot of people left disappointed with the sale, Woolies not doing too well for themselfs.

But i have noticed this before although i can't remember what store it was but it was the same "up to" in small writing with a huge "50% off" bringing you in.

If it seems too good to be true, it usually is.... :)

up to50% OFF all stock ............Woolworths

up to 50% OFF all Sat Navs.......Halfords

Advertisements like this are hardly designed to boost consumer confidence?
  • I just saw the halfords one on TV and it definetely said 50% off ALL sat navs. Went on the website and only a handful are actually halfprice!
  • You should probably complain about your school rather than Woolworths - they're the ones that were meant to teach you how to read.

Thanks very much for your contribution, but I'll be reporting your comment.:T For you to suggest I have to improve my reading is hurtful, and down right ignorant.

    On what basis?

50% off ALL (emphasis added) stock seems to me to be - 50% off everything.

Perhaps we should ask them if they are prepared to accept " up to "100% of the price?"
