  • Such an interesting thread!

I want to be debt free so that I can feel in control of, and make the most of and get on with my life, be ready for adventures and all that life throws at me.:j

...rather than being stressed about losing my job, losing my home, how I'm going to pay X off, running out of money half-way through the month and living on toast, not going out, not sleeping etc, then buying more junk on credit cards to 'compensate'/cheer me up as is the case now.

It's a gradual process, but it's starting to 'click'... I keep going by thinking of that day, when I wake up that morning and it's payday, and I know that the only debt I have to pay that month is my mortgage (sometimes, in the dream I don't have a mortgage, but let's not run before we can walk!), and that everything else that I've earnt I can spend on what I like. Like someone else said, then I will be putting a post with banners declaring that I'm debt free to the world!
  • My aim is to get rid of my debts and manage my money so that I can live on the little I earn, but how can you save and pay off debts if there is not enough to cover the basics every month, I don't know where I can cut any corners any more.
Short of plan B ( winning the lottery) and plan C ( getting a really well paid job) I feel really stuck.
I don't have credit cards but I have a career development loan to pay off, I need to keep my job to pay bills so have little time to take on any more work. Is there any one in a similar position that has some advice of how thay have helped themselves.

    Kind regards

Woolly, why don't you ask your question in a new thread? If you post an SOA I'm sure people will be able to give you some ideas.

As my signiture suggests, my incentive to get debt free is my OH has promised he will move from Ireland to England within 30 days of me getting debt free. For me personally getting debt free means I can come home on an evening and paint or sew or experiement with my kiln without feeling bad that im not making money. It also means I can look to get my own house in a few years with a heafty deposit, meaning a lower mortgage and less pressure on my income for when I have children.

  • I want to buy a house and live with my boyfriend :)
  • I am debt free and all because of whenever i look at anything to buy i hear my old Dad saying " If you ain't got the cash you dont have it " He left no debt when he passed (xmas eve 1981)and wasn't a rich man but he didn't owe anybody. Life is tough but once you have got debt free stay there, dont be tempted. Hard but its peace of mind.
    cheers Dad ;)
  • This is true and very sensible gillywiz, but my debts began as a student paying for my education and whilst my career got going I couldn't afford to pay them off AND afford to meet the increasing costs of going out to work....

Throw in a big lump of financial ignorance, leave to marinate a few years whilst the debt rises through interest, and then liberally sprinkle with fear because it's so huge that even the thought of the guessed size of it made me feel sick.

Then as a final flourish, buy myself a few 'treats', on credit, in (what I can now see) was frustration at earning and not having the 'lifestyle' that I thought I should have have earned by all those years of studying and by now working so hard when more and more of my salary goes on servicing those debts...

It's very hard facing all that and trying to sort it out... here's to everyone tackling their debts. Keep your eye on the prize!
