  • To have at least two holidays a year and to have a bit of money saved in the bank 'just because'. I've never done either despite my massive total of debt :o

I long for the day I start my own thread titled 'I did it, I'm debt free' ;)

To feel free from 'maybe next year'
To feel like i can actually help others who need help and just need a little, well, help!
To take my children on great holidays, even if that means budgeting the rest of the time (hey, it'll teach them delayed gratification, right?)
To be able to fulfil both mine and the childrens' dreams for the future.

  • I guess most of us here want the same things, but each of us will have a different view of what that means to us.

For me (here comes the corny bit!!) -

What I want ? or My motivation ?
    1) To have no consumer debt & no mortgage
    2) To be semi self sufficient
    3) To have financial independence & stability
    4) To be able to live within my means on my terms
    5) To live & enjoy a comfortable yet "simpler" way of life
    6) To have time for the people & things that really matter to me

Having not only had a LBM but an epiphany (sp??) as well :rotfl:
My way of looking at things has changed drastically - I intend to move forward from now on - with a "How can I make this happen" frame of mind.

When I had my light bulb moment, my reason/s for wanting to be debt free were:
    1. Wanting to take control of my finances without having to rob Peter to pay Paul
    2. To be able to take a cut in salary if necessary, so that I can either change to a less stressful job or work less hours
    3. To be able to have no secrets from my husband
    4. To be able to sleep fully without waking up in a cold sweat worrying about how I'm going to meet my payments every month
Even though I am only 2 months into my DMP, I feel that I have managed to acheived (1) & (4) thanks to Payplan. Hubby is now fully aware of my debts so (3) has been achieved.

Since starting on my DMP and telling my husband, I have realised that the main reason I want to be debt free is that I want a family. I have realised that I have been lying to myself for the past few years and saying to my husband that we're not ready to have a family. I believe that this is because I knew that I wasn't in a position to be able to give up work, as I wouldn't be able to make my minimum payments every month and also at the time I wasn't brave enough to tell him my real reasons for not wanting a family. Oh how I wish I has found here sooner and been able to be honest with him since the begining of our relationship, but as some one else has said, hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Quite simply, I WANT TO EMPLOY A CLEANER!
I hate cleaning and used to have one pre LBM. Will be the first thing I do when paid the egg card off.
  • To be able to go out and have a life (and meet women) without moths flying out of my wallet/ not being able to afford anything. Plus a move down south next autumn hopefully.
  • Apart from the relief and general good feeling you will get from being debt free, what are you other motivations?

For me, once I am debt free, we are going to save to go on a Fly-Drive in California/Nevada. To keep me motivated I have pages from a holiday brochure stuck to my fridge.

For me, it's a way of getting back to being able to live the sort of life that I once had. i.e. simple, low stress (though it didn't feel that way at the time), being able to go out with friends for a meal without worrying about the price, building up a bit of savings so I can do some travelling - even if it is in one or two week bursts. Most of all, getting control of my life back. I see life as a gift from nature and it would be a great pity to not live it as effectively as I can.
  • Its great to see what peoples motivations are. Hopefully with a little effort we will all get there.

    What a lovely thread...

I have similar reasons for wanting to be debt free. I really want to be able to travel with my family to all different parts of the world.

I also want to be able to afford clubs and hobbies for my children, for example swimming, guitar lessons, Tennis etc. I want to open up as many opportunities as possible for them.
