What is your debt-free motivation?

Apart from the relief and general good feeling you will get from being debt free, what are you other motivations?

For me, once I am debt free, we are going to save to go on a Fly-Drive in California/Nevada. To keep me motivated I have pages from a holiday brochure stuck to my fridge.

    I AM debt and mortgage free and my inspiration was to have a happy retirement and not become dependent on anyone. I also want to to keep visiting places I've never been to for as long as I can. Any surplus will be used to help out my family.

    Keep looking at your brochure!

    Like Lilcapixie, my motivation is so we'll be able to move to a bigger house in a couple of years time. Currently we're in a 2 bed flat which while it's lovely we want to have a house and garden for the girls in the not too distant future.

    Exactly our position. 2 bed flat which thankfully I bought several years ago so small mortgage but high levels of unsecured debt. Two kids 4 months and 25 months old and we just need to get the unsecured stuff shifted and savings established so we can sell up and move on.

  • Initially, my motivation is just to get out of all debt including the mortgage, then spend some money on the house to get the kitchen and bathroom, and general decor into a state that I will be happy with long-term.

    After that, it will be to save enough for my retirement, so that:
    • I don't have to worry about monthly household bills;
    • I can afford to run a small car;
    • I have enough in the bank to take care of any major repairs to the house and car;
    • I can afford to support a small rescue dog.
    If I can also factor in the odd weekend away with my dog, that will be a nice but not absolutely necessary bonus.

    My motivation is a holiday that I've been planning for a while in 2011.

    Me and brother are going to Florida for 3 weeks. 1 week to watch NASCAR racing, then the other 2 weeks we're going to all the theme parks there.

    If I don't get debt free by then, I'll still probably go! lol. I'll just be in more debt lol.

    Another motivation is that I'm going to get driving lessons when I can afford to. As long as I get a regular work next year my overdrafts should be paid off within a year. Then I can rebuild my credit rating, then in 7-8 years time, ok maybe 10-15 years I can start to think about buying a house/flat.
  • I want to be debt-free so that we can start saving for a baby... and then upgrade from our 2-bed flat to a 3-bed semi with a nice garden :o

    Though I do become rather obsessed with planning and re-planning, and watching every little penny....I think it's important to live in the present and not wish your time away. :rolleyes:

    I want to be debt free before my children finish school so that I don't feel the pressure when they go to uni.....

    But the biggest "driver" for me is that I want to live in a particular part of town.......and that isn't the cheap part :o I have wanted to live there since I was a very little girl, so it really is the thing of dreams.
