Just bought some genuine VW stuff from GSF - used to be about £2.50 a litre then was just over £3 the last time I bought it from them in November - today £4.10 - about the same as the italian wine I bought from M&S today. I used a whole bottle (diluted x4) on a recent trip London - Exeter return.

GSF have ripped you off :( genuine VW screenwash is no more than £3.50 at any dealer in the country!

I have two vehicles, a Terrano and a Fiesta. The Terrano's now over 10 years old, and you can see the washer bottle has 10 years worth of muck in it, but the jets still work most of the time, the Fiesta's less than 3 years old. The problem does seem to be the jets themselves freezing up, so I started to look around for some heated jets (these used to be sold by a mail-order company years ago, but no longer seem to b available). I eventually tracked a pair down on ebay, from a Ford Focus, though they didn't have the wiring loom. Before I had chance to fit them, one of the washer jets on the Fiesta started freezing up when I used it. On investigation, I found that the sound insulation under the bonnet was covering the pipe to that washer jet. I managed to re-route the hose to the other side of the insulation and did the same to the Terrano. Result? This winter I've not had the jets freeze up at all, and I've still got those heated jets in my tool box. The problem appears to be a lack of engine heat (this was a big problem with those MGF cars, the engine's in the boot and the washers would freeze, Rover designed a heated nozzle kit to sort it they're a bit expensive though) so try and get engine heat to the area first, if that doesn't work try searching ebay for heated washer jets, there's always a selection available.

surely wiring up a small resistor and cable tieing it to the pipe near the nozzle would work?

I've used meths for all the years I've been driving, as it was what my dad's always done.
Best/cheapest place to buy it is a pharmacist!
I've never had a problem with it leaving a residue on the screen, as it's a de-greaser

There's a few guides on how to do it on owners websites, I found a good guide on www.zsoc.com though you need to register (it's free), then look for the guide Heated Washer Jets For Dummies
