B&Q - checkout operator having to scan a discount card and manually input a 2.1% discount. Almost forgot for me.
Sainsburys - Discount at foot of bill

Home Bargains - NO change to prices

Most places i've been in - sainsbury's, wilkos, asda etc have not yet changed the SELs but are in the process of doing so and in the mean time, are simply applying the reduction at the till.

One company I know of is taking an interesting angle on this... Lovehoney, (online adult store) are not passing on the VAT reduction in their prices. Instead, what they are doing is creating a "virtual pot" of money, and are having a competition to see who wins it; they expect it to become "a five figure sum" apparently. Their rationale behind this was that (a) it'd take an age to get all the prices on every product amended, and (b) that all in all, a price drop on most items they carry due to the VAT change would be pennies difference... They felt it would surely be a far bigger stimulus to the economy and to customer purchases to offer a cash competition than a few pennies off the toys.

Tbh, I think they have a point!

There's no law that forces them to. Most companies are feeling the pinch at the moment, they're not all going to pass on the reduction. Blame Gordon Brown for messing up the economy.

Gordon brown is the last person I would vote for, but it aint his fault the econamy is in such a state....if u wanna blame someone
...blame the American companies that lent money out to people 'willy nilly' to buy houses there...thats why every country is in a bad state

I had a discount at the till in John Lewis last Thursday, also at Bravissimo and Liz Earle on Monday and in Starbucks today. I think all have not amended their shelf-edge or price ticket prices, it was just a nice surprise at the till.

This cut is there for consumer and the retailer - to use whatever way they deem is the best for them. If a company is in trouble they might not be 'pocketing the difference' but using the extra money to keep people in employment and to keep their businesses afloat. I think that maybe people might do well to remember this instead of moaning that a pair of trainers has not been reduced from £50 to £49.

What you also need to remember is that if you did not have the money to buy this before then you do not have now. I am sorry for the lecture but there are a lot of people who think this 'cut' is going to be a HUGE benefit for them and might get into more debt over this with credit cards by thinking that goods are going to be much cheaper. The reality is that if you spend £500 in VATable goods between now and Xmas you'll be £10 better off. Remember, that does not include most food stuffs. I'll probably spend £150 in VATable stuff so I'll be, ohhh, £3 better off, I promise not to spend that all at once.

If a retailer 'pocketing' 21p of a £10 spend helps them in this current climate and keeps people in a job then it is not fair for people to come criticising that company - it will cost the entire country a lot more if they have more unemployment benefits to pay!

The Chancellor is an idiot, what he should have said is that he was passing on the cut so it can be used to help the ECOMONY, people in jobs means more Tax & NI is paid for example, there is a whole bigger picture here not just your 2.1% saving - and you can get more than this by using cashback sites and shopping around.

People should carry on shopping in the same way as they did before - looking for the best price. Some of those best prices come from those who have not reduced their rates so does that mean you'll buy the more expensive product out of principle? I thought not. So this thread is pretty pointless and irrelevant.

There are reports of customers threatening shop employees over a few pennies in savings if it has not been deducted. I am sure the Clown Chancellor should be pleased with himself with this. Just what is this country coming to when we have to threaten people over a few pennies saving.

Out of interest, look at Woolworths, the tax cut could help them keep 30,000 people in jobs and the company trading. Should they pass the cut on and let the company sink or keep the difference to keep people in their jobs and help the company keep on trading and paying back their debts. What would your preferred option be?

I blame Maggie Thatcher myself..... :rotfl: It's the Labour answer for everything. Let's blame the Tories.

Maybe the people are to blame for buying houses they could not afford and borrowing 10 times their salary to buy houses that were over-inflated. The banks are to blame for lending that money. What about buying on credit cards that people could not afford to pay back? That is not Americas fault.

Now Gordon Clown is saying people should not have to pay those mortgages back so they do not get their houses repossessed and end up homeless. So people will just be delaying the inevitable for 2 years and in the meantime racking up more debts in interest so it has to still be paid back. What is the point in that? So that the homeless owe more money?

Can anyone save us from this mess??

Trouble is though, the companies do not want to share their good fortune when they're doing well either.

The cut was supposed to help the consumer, not profit the retailers.

I disagree - the cut was supposed to help the ECONOMY.

If the retailer has more profit they will have more taxes to pay so the economy gains.

As I said, just because they are not passing on the cut it does not mean they are cheaper.

I am not passing on the cut and my prices are still cheaper than other retailers selling what I sell as I already sell at a discount to be competitive. Even the Tax cut is not going to get my competitors anywhere near my prices. As I said, shop in the same way as you did before, look around for goods that are cheapest and for discount vouchers.
