I have paid a deposit on a suite at SCS. Although there is still about 80% of the bill outstanding and I have not received the suite yet, they will not take the VAT off the outstanding balance. Shame on them!

So far this week, I've purchased xmas gifts from Argos, Lakeland & Amazon and they have all passed on the VAT reduction.

Have also purchased online from Jo Jo Maman today and they didn't pass on the reduction.

Perhaps it would be useful to have a separate thread of who is not passing on the reduction.

If you were buying childrens clothing there should be no change I believe since there is no VAT charged on them????? I am sure someone will correct me if I got this wrong!
  • Hi everyone,

My name is Lewis and I work at IKEA. We cut the VAT rate to 15% on all products from Monday the 1st of December.

As a gesture of goodwill, for any purchases made since the VAT announcement on Monday 24th November 2008, IKEA will refund the VAT difference in the form of a gift card.

For purchases made in store - you need to present your receipt to the customer returns department in-store on your next visit to receive your gift card.

This gesture of goodwill also applies to goods purchased from our Shop Online service. You can make your request for a gift card refund by contacting your local store's customer services team - the telephone numbers for which can be found in the IKEA catalogue or on www.ikea.co.uk

Our standard returns policy and terms and conditions apply should you wish to return products they have purchased to IKEA. This means that unused items in their original packaging can be returned within 90 days with your till receipt for a full refund.

    Thanks!

    Lewis
  • Dixons online have actually put their prices up! A netbook on sunday was £314 including P&P, now its £318. Not much of an increase but still one all the same. Today the price includes P&P while yesterday it was extra.

Generally speaking the larger companies will reduce their prices but the smaller ones wont because they are struggling and it's little bonus for them.

You can't really expect all companies to pass on the VAT reduction unless we had a system like in North America were the sales tax is added on at point of sale. But that is something the EU would have to change.

I went to my local mcdonalds and there were posters everywhere stating due to vat cut they had to increase their prices! but wait for it, vat cut is measly 2.1% but a cheeseburger went from 79p up to 99p, now if my math serves me right thats somewhere in the region of 15.8% price increase but a huge 1200% marup on the 2.1% vat cut

Actually, I work that out at a stonking 25% increase(price including VAT). If you take the old pre VAT price and the new price, the increase before VAT is actually over 28%.

Had they not increased prices, the cheeseburger would be .78p which would actually give the company a tiny increase in price.

I will be voting with my feet as far as this and any other establishment is concerned which uses this tax reduction as a means of increasing profit!!!!!

I went in to Sports Direct and was shocked to find they're not passing on the VAT reduction.

My mum's ordered and paid for two sofa's from Ikea, but they don't deliver until next week. Is she entitled to ask for a refund of the VAT difference?

There's no law that forces them to. Most companies are feeling the pinch at the moment, they're not all going to pass on the reduction. Blame Gordon Brown for messing up the economy.

I know there is no law but I would have thought as a large company like most large companies it would have passed it on.

and I'm in the camp where I believe greed has been partially to blame for the economic situation.
