  • The Chinese restaurents and take aways in this area don't seem to have reduced their prices.
  • What about a gift from John Lewis wedding gifts scheme(small TV) ordered and paid for weeks ago but not in stock so not received by 'happy couple'. Now due to be received in next 2 weeks. The current new price however is £50 cheaper due to a) price reduction : b) vat reduction BUT John Lewis not passing it on to the newlyweds!!
  • Severn Bridge is not passing on the VAT...
  • Potnoodle,

Gordon Brown takes a lot of responsibility in this whole mess. Trust me, in the future we will be looking back on him as one of the worst chancellors ever. He is certainly not prudent.

Also, I do not believe that any company should pass on the VAT cut. This government is run by an unelected leader and he should have been told to naff off long ago and call an election.

Anyone complaining that small businesses should be passing on this VAT cut should think about how much it will cost small businesses to change everything and if it really makes a difference on sub £100 purchases you have to wonder what kind of state you are in (money wise).

Be very cautious if challenging a shop keeper if you think an item should be cheaper - it may not be VATable.

As seen at my local supermarket on Monday, when a lady in front of me had a shouting match with the manager (she shouted, he took it on the chin) - she had a receipt from the weekend to compare with her current receipt and had noticed no change in prices so obviously decided she was being stitched up. Upon being told that the items she had bought were not VAT-able she replied "I'm dreadfully sorry but I refuse to accept your explanation" - well that was the gist, most of the words were considerably shorter and more anglo-saxon in their origin!
Eventually the manager promised to personally pay her £1000 if she could find any evidence that his prices were wrong, even going so far as to give her the telephone number of our local VAT office! I suspect she is out there somewhere, now swearing at the nice chaps from HMRC, permanently convinced that everybody except her is wrong....

On the subject of general ignorance, one of my colleagues today said he wasn't worried about the housing crash as his house had gone up 100% in two years, so a 50% fall from now would still leave him 50% up....and they say educational standards are improving...
if i had known then what i know now
  • My ISP - Madasafish - say they will pass on the VAT cut; no details
  • Primark have passed on the VAT cut on all clothes (not childrens, but i believe these are tax exempt anyway?)

It would be great if people took their politics debate to the arms so you could actually see the shops cutting the VAT, what this thread was intended for.
    OnePoll - £12.40, Yougov - £1.00, VO - £24.25, youdoo miles - 24292, MHF - £0.00
Not much, but its a start :rotfl:

Does it matter whether they pass on the cut? It might not make them cheaper and the point of these boards is to get the best buys.

Would you shun the cheapest place in favour of a more expensive product from somewhere that has passed on the cut? Someone on these boards said they would which is pretty pointless IMHO.

I personally do not care whether a company has passed on the VAT or not. If it is cheap enough I'll buy it, if it isn;t then I won't. I've not even checked who has or has not passed on the cut as I do not care. Am I the only one?

    Exactly. It's all pretty academic.
