Orange is passing on the VAT cut as I had a text from them last night confirming it

Read from a couple of other forums that Sky had confirmed to a couple of people who had called that they would be passing on the cut, but it was taking them longer to work out how to do it
  • Poundstretcher are passing on the VAT cuts. Loads of bargains, especially Christmas goodies :T
  • Thorntons Chocolates and WH Samuel Jewellers are also taking off VAT at the counter...I really don't understand the logic, by reducing VAT small businesses, and large eg Woolworths and MFI are having to foot huge losses, so how is it supposed to help?

MFI & Woolies aren't making losses through the VAT cut. They're making losses because they're poorly run and uncompetitive.

They don't pay the VAT on the products you buy - you do. The retailers just pass it along.

Hence this entire thread about which retailers are cutting their prices. Some companies are just keeping the difference which increases their profits (on products that are VAT rated).

It's supposed to help by making products cheaper so people buy more.

Whether it will or not is an entirely different argument ;)
It's not a lot of work unless you have to do it.
  • Maplins have just increased their ex-VAT price so as to charge the same. I need to order something that I can only get from them but will only use them as the last choice!

What??!! So you have nowhere else to buy it from yet you'll buy it from Maplins as a last choice...... That has to be the daftest comment of the year so far!!

The thing is, with all the 'specials' and sales that these companies run, why should they reduce their prices, some of which will be just a few pence. I bet everyone will go running back to the 'shamed' retailers if they have a price glitch or special offer that everyone is after.

Again, the drop is there to help the economy. If 'pocketing the difference' means it keeps people in jobs then I for one do not care if the rate is not applied. Everyone will be complaining when the rate has to rise to 22.5% to a) make up for the drop and b) pay the additional unemployment benefit from people losing their jobs after Xmas because of all these price wars.

If people do spend the additional 2.13% the govement is losing our by .37% from what they would have charged before. How the chancellor thinks that by giving 20p back in every £10 people are suddenly going to find more money to spend is anyones guess. He is a muppet!! And he looks like one too!! Let's face it. I personally think that it is leading people into a false sense of security, people are going to spend more thinking they have more - only they don't and in a years time there are going to be more people in debt than there are now.

But hey, I guess this Government likes to lead by example!

    We are still shopping mad.
I went past Woolworths today and posters proclaimed 50% OFF (with "up to" in smaller writing.)
In reality there was 30% off the mas stuff such as crackers, 20% off hardware and only 10% off foodstuffs. The stock on the shelves looked like it pre-dated the 2.13% reduction due to the vat cut..
However this was enough to create a queue that snaked round the shop like the conga was the dance of the week.
  • I've not even checked who has or has not passed on the cut as I do not care. Am I the only one?

If you dont care, maybe you could kindly take your insistent political commentary to another, more suitable thread, so the people who clearly do can post in this one in peace?

    The arms maybe... ?

Not much, but its a start :rotfl:

  • I agree. I thought this was a money saving site. Lets keep things so that those who want to save money can come to Martins site and those who want to rant on about Brown, Thatcher, Attila the Hun etc can set up their own site (or perhaps there is one if someone can provide a link???:T
