jkdd77, Halfords don't charge a little bit more, they charge 20 TIMES more! OK, you might not agree with their policy, but I don't agree with Halfords' policy of charging far more than an item's value!!!

jkdd77 thanks for posting. It's good to stand up for what you believe. I hope you won't mind my comments on it.

There are plenty of good reasons for boycotting a shop. Personally I don't think a bit of overkill on the age limit is one of them. I would suggest there are more more worthy causes to champion...

It reminds me of the story about a Co-op off licence that wouldn't serve alcohol to a pensioner because he couldn't produce ID!!!

As a young deaf adult I encourage everyone to boycott Poundland because of their prejudiced and ageist policy of not selling basic household items (such as glue and scissors) to anyone under 21.

if only stats could show how many times poundlands policy had saved someone from being stabbed or killed by an under 21 not buying a knife.
staff in poundland are barely 21 themselves so are hardly qualifiied in deciding who should and shouldnt buy knifes or scissors or even paid enough to challenge anyone buying them.
i think theres better reasons than this to not buy from poundland. but i'll keep them to myself.

If an Under-21 year old wants to buy a knife, he or she will buy a knife, irrespective of whether one retailer wishes to sell them one. If only stats could show how many over 21 year olds stabbed someone with a poundland knife....

I wrote to Poundland asking for stats, but they refused to give them, even after my MP got involved, which suggests their policy has nothing to do with "safety" and everything to do with prejudice towards, steretyping of, and hatred of young adults- discrimination which would, quite rightly, not be tolerated against any other minority group, even if "unpopular".

I don't see how it helps the company policy to adopt a policy which would be illegal in most other Western countries (such as Canada and Australia), is about to be made illegal in this countries, and which treats young adult customers as second class citizens.

p1an0player- there's a big difference between refusing to sell to an individual customer because of something that is their own fault (not having ID), and adopting a blanket policy of discrimination against all members of a "demonised other" minority group- imagine if they did the same sort of "overkill" against Muslims- it would be rightly condemned by everyone as unacceptable.

How would you like it if you were refused a sale purely on the basis of your race/ religion/ gender/ sexual orientation/ disability? Well, it's the same for young adults.

On a more positive note, I've had a good experience of Maplin Electronics, who seem to sell similar quality products to Halfords at a lower price, and I presume that this includes headlamp bulbs. :-)

Alternatively, Poundsaver and Pound World sell the same sort of products, but without the discrimination.

poundland is a buisness, not selling certain items of thiers to certain age groups will have a reason behind it,wether you like it or not.

buy your plastic scissors and pritt stick elsewhere if you dont like thier terms. simple.

I suspect that Poundland got told off for selling liqueur chocolates or maybe an 18-rated video to a 15 year old.

Because there are different age limits for different products (knives / alcohol / video), it's easier to have a blanket ban on sales of all age-restricted products to people who look under 21.

They probably use a lot of seasonal / temp staff and it's just simpler this way rather than give them training on age limits and risk the staff making a mistake.

I'll check out Maplins for bulbs then, thanks!

Back on topic, Osram Silverstars are a great H4 bulb, they're used by loads of us Mk1 MR2 owners as the headlights are notoriously crap. www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk usually do a good deal on them.
