  • Blimey Goldspanners how times change.

Some 25 years or more ago my guvnor at the time was paid a visit by the Ring rep, who subseqently sold him thousands of their blasted bulbs.
We used Lucas bulbs before in the trucks and they lasted ages, well these Ring things were appalling, half the time they'd fizzle out as you put them in.

I used to travel a regular route empty from Widnes across to Calverton colliery in Notts to collect coal, out of 8 Ring bulbs fitted to a trailer, 6 would usually blow during that 2 hour journey, they couldn't stand the hard ride of an empty trailer.
Its a good job the guvnor bought boxes of them, cos i could get through 20 or 30 a week on my own.
I wonder if the rep was getting rid of seconds or faulty ones, as their more recent products do seem better.

indeed times have changed, that sounds like they were poor bulbs back in the day.

im guessing thats the old style bulb, commonly refered to as a bus headlight bulb as apparently all old buses used these big bulbs.
i had a set of ring headlight bulbs got well over a year from them, they were apparently 50% brighter, i couldnt find them again when looking for them,so i tried the osram nightbreakers, they lasted about 3 months, then i got the philips ones, still on them,i bought another set as spare just incase these ones ever go,they seem to be lasting forever. (tempting fate i know)
