If you can powerthe GSP head you could use it on foot, however; as the power comes through the cigar lighter socket you would need to find a way of powering it through another source...car batterys are a little heavy to carry aroundWelcome, rogerramjet.

Possibly, but I couldn't tell as I use a PDA with bluetooth unit myself.
If I'm not mistaken there is a lead which goes to the cigar lighter socket which then splits, one to power the pda and one to power the gps head.
maybe someone who has recently purchased a unit can let us know, after all, all they need to do is disconnect the lead from the cigar lighter socketWelcome, rogerramjet.

GPS is powered ONLY with the items connected in the car. This is done via a y shaped cable.
Hope this helps.0 -
This looks a great deal, but can someone please tell me how good the European maps are? Would you be able to navigate through france ok? We are driving from Cherbourg to La Rochelle in the summer.
Edit - A confusing post here :- http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=25027&view=next leads me to believe that you can download maps from the Mio website? But I can't find them anywhere on the website suggested...Tesco Deals Vouchers : £1500 in deals used towards Florida 2010 honeymoon and £318 towards Wedding rings in Goldsmiths - Thanks to all Tesco points savers who helped me along the way! :beer:0 -
Just thought that i would give everybody my opinion on this unit as I have been running it now for about a month (bought last time around). It comes with everything needed to run sta-nav in your car, you cannot use it on foot unless you use a bluetooth gps receiver (can buy them built in)
It does not do a full post code search, so lets say your post code is like PO12 3BY, as you enter it it will let you put in PO12 3 and it then lists the streets, and you have to choose one. This is my first PDA and it runs medion navigator software (2003) but all the guys in my office were saying how good Tom Tom was. So I loaded Tom Tom onto the PDA but could not get the software to find the GPS receiver so I reverted back to Medion. I have found the Medion software very good over the last month with the voice being both loud and clear.
You can buy speed camera software to run with the navigator software but I think it is around £70 per year. This is a really good unit and the software is good, this is a bargain. It is also very quick in starting up once plugged in.
I'm not sure what the foreign maps are like because you have to purchase them seperately but if they are like the UK maps then it will be invaluable on a jaunt abroad. You can also search for places of interest on the software eg hotels.:coffee:0 -
Just found this

give lots and you will always recieve lots0 -
To make it work with Tomtom, please see this (it is the PM i have sent to people who requested it with a few edits)
The realtek GPS receiver you get with the device isn't specifically set up for NMEA communication.
You need to download this:
http://www.gpspassion.com/upload/GPSmonitor1.1.zip
Copy it to your PDA memory, go to programs/file explorer and open it.
Go and plug in your PDA to the GPS receiver and car supply and with CE monitor open, find where it says connect (I am sorry but I don't have my PDA with me to see under which menu it might be.
Once connected, out of memory you need to go to file and then command.
Once on this menu, I believe there is a tab at the bottom stating "NMEA", click it and you will find the following set up:
GGA 1 VTG 1
GLL 0 MSS 0
GSA 5
GSV 5
RMC 1
(you will see what I mean once you get to this stage), you need to change them to:
GGA 1 VTG 1
GLL 2 MSS 2
GSA 5
GSV 5
RMC 1
Once changed, you will be able to open up medion navigator and go to preferences and scroll through until you find "GPS status". Click this and then "configure".
Set it up as "Other GPS receiver". Unfortunately I can't remember where it is com 1, 2 or 3 what you need to use. It's NOT com X IrDr (or similar, which is infrared) but it is com 1 or 3 I think preceded by approx 4 letters. If you need help on this set later then do let me know since I can check. I think it will be obvious, it is also in the Medion manual, I tihnk it's com 1...
You will then see it pick up satellites. To use with Medion Navi, you might just have to reverse the procedure.

I've had the same model for a couple of years. The out of date mapping hasn't been a problem yet, but perhaps the most noticeable omission is the M6 Toll Road. It appears that you are travelling across fields.0
