Bet you get a shock when you hit the toll road and actually have to pay instead of it being a field.
Just out of interest if you do a route from A to B and the M6 toll road is in between will it still send you through the field where the toll should be or would it just send you in another direction, maybe the normal M6
Does anyone know how much the updates are and do Medion charge for shipping of the unit or is £129 the all in cost?0 -
The shipping was about £3.50 ... just got an e-mail confirming despatch ... HTH0

Hi
I know nothing about sat nav can anybody help, please?
My daughter is going backpacking around Thailand and Australia from Tuesday. Would one of the hand-held devices be any use to her in those countries and would it help us find her if anything untoward happened?
Thanks0 -

Don't know much on the matter myself either but from what I understand the sat nav can only be used in a vehicle as I think you need some sort of bluetooth device to use it while on foot but the more expensive ones have it built in so you can use it while walking / trekking etc
You would have to look at the cost for the map software as this one only come with UK and europe.
You could look for a handheld garmin sat nav system which can be used for trekking and think they have a digital compass for map reading but people who understand better than me will be able to give you some good advice0 -

This one is a bit bulky to carry around as the seperate GPS receiver is connected by a wire and a car plug.
The one available in the Sommerfield/ Kwiksave thread is fully portable, having an in-built GPS receiver, so dash down to your local Kwiksave and get one for £129, you may be lucky.
See page 2 post #19 here , the gps aerial is at the top but folds down at the back of the pda so totally pocketable,

Which seems to be the better unit? The medion Pocket PC or Micromaxx MDPPC 150 which is being sold at kwik save / somerfield. Dont know much about sat nav but the medion one seems to come with alot more stuff in the box0

The 250 had a seperate GPS receiver to fix to the windscreen whereas the 150 has an inbuilt receiver. Im told that the 250 therefore would get a better reception but dont hold me to it.
Ive just got the 250 because I needed a new PDA and simply as a PDA this is a bargain, light, very smart looking, reasonable battery life. Plus you get the full kit for GPS as well. An excellent package at a great price. No way do these look refurbished, looks like excess stock to me.

It sends you down the old M6. If you're on an unmarked road, eg a campsite some distance from a road and turn it on, it shows your location as being somewhere just outside Hamburg! The map only corrects once you approach a known road on the system.0 -

No use whatsoever unfortunately, unless:
a) you can source compatible mapping for these countries
b) she has some means of recharging regularly. Battery life is extremely limited (3 hours?) away from a 12v/240v source.
You'd be better off with proper 'pedestrian' gps devices such as those here:
http://www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk/recreational-handhelds.html
and only then if you can get mapping for the countries she is visiting.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0
