GAME
I purchased the DS Lite deal with two games and it was still 139.99 and with the insurance an additional 14.99. I queried this at the till and was told that the saving with the two games was more than the VAT. I still said that they were only being charged 15% VAT but in effect I was still paying the same. I should have received at least the £2.80 saving ignoring the insurance.
The two games would have been £60 together with the consuoe being £99 full price. Interestingly when rung up the console price displayed was £97.98 with the games deal added on it still came to £139.99! It would appear that the computer system would not let them override the system to give the discounted price and the reduction in VAT. So an increase of 2.5%0 -
BT monthly line rental.
Was £10 + 17.5% vat, now £11.75 inc vat.0 -

I'm a bit suspicious of some of the "sales" prices. I've seen signs in shops stating that full selling prices will have VAT deducted at the till but sales prices already have the reduced VAT already applied. Rather strange in shops where all their prices (after sale reduction applied) are round numbers e.g £35, £48,0

I purchased 2 items in Debenhams today and it was clear the vat reduction was not given, i queried this and they told me that because their promotion was so good, it worked out better to offer this than the VAT reduction. I would have accepted this had i not been paying full price for the items so there was no promotion, they then told me to call their customer helpline, which i did and they said all their staff have been told they should be offering the VAT reduction and that i should speak to Trading Standards, which i will be doing tomorrow!0

It may just be our store, but my mum bought a necklace from Swarovski, and when it didn't come to a stupid .83 or whatever, she queried if they had reduced their prices due to VAT. She wasn't particularly happy that the two sales assistants sniggered and asked her if she "wanted that" before giving her the few pence. Does anyone know if the shop assistants in our local store are pocketing the difference or if they aren't reducing their prices and just gave my mum the money out of goodwill or whatever?
Thanks!0
