Was in Poundland today and noticed that they hadnt reduced the end bill at all.
VAT was on bottom reciept and clearly showed it was at 15%, so over 2p per item extra profit. Maybe not a lot per item but considering how many items they sell a week it would add to a large amount.0 -
JD sports have not passed the discount on0

I visited a VW dealer this week to enquire about a new VW Golf, expecting the price to be reduced from the July OTRP to reflect the VAT reduction to 15%
Bearing in mind that the Mark V Golf is to be superceded by the Mark VI in Jan 09 I was surprised to be given a new price list for the Mark V range which had a 1% increase in the basic price resulting in a VAT saving of much less than I expected
The explanation given was that VW increase prices at this time of year
I wonder how many other car manufacturers are following this route?0 -
I heard Poundland are waiting for their new signs to be manufactured before they pass on the VAT saving, 98pLand does't have the same ring about it though does it

That joke is a little stale now...I swear that it has been made at least once a day since the announcement by the Chancellor. We have removed your signature - please contact the forum team if you are not sure why - Forum Team0 -
Well I wanna buy a new (well nearly new actually) car, and not many dealers seem to have decreased their prices. In fact a couple of them last week told me that because they'd purchased the cars with the 17.5% rate, they'd have to sell at the same price. Surely don't they reclaim the 17.5% and only declare the 15%?? It can make a couple of hundred pounds difference on a £10k car.
I used to work in the motor trade but now run my own company - no longer in the motor trade but still charging and paying VAT. Unfortunately, if a car was registered before December 1st, the motor dealer would have had to pay the manufacturer 17.5%, therefore that is the price that they will base their resale value on to you. Only cars registered/purchased from the manufacturer since the VAT reduction will have been charged at 15% and therefore that lower rate should be passed on to you. If it is a used car you are buying, then the VAT has already been paid when the car was brand new. It is no different to you having purchased a coat from a high street store 2 months ago and now to buy it brand new, it is 2.5% cheaper but you cannot get your money back on the original price - I hope that makes sense!! - I would suggest you wait 3 or 4 months and then bargain hard with the credit crunch etc you are bound to get a brilliant deal - I got over £2k off of a 6 months old Citroen C5 in October. Try not to have a part exchange and you will get an even better deal. I just need to sell my 2007 Honda Accord top of the range!! ...Anyone interested???:rotfl:0 -
MAPLIN ELECTRONICS are VAT scrooges too.
Checking the pre-VAT price in the catalogue, I was hoping to save about £1 on my purchases when VAT was added, but at the till the assistant rung up the old full price.
When I queried it and asked if they'd put the prices up to keep the same post-VAT price, he flatly denied it and told me some c0ck-and-bull story about Maplin only reducing the prices of the really expensive gear costing hundreds. His exact words, "for the cheaper stuff where you'd only be saving pennies, we haven't made any adjustments."
Pennies, my @rse.. it was nearly a pound and every pound makes a difference to me.
Having denied the increase in price, I asked them how they'd kept the price the same and whether they're still somehow charging the old 17.5%. He referred me to his equally clueless colleague who said they were.
I told them to give me the VAT receipt and I'd take it up with Revenue and Customs. The receipt showed the correct VAT rate at 15% and the ex-VAT price was higher than in their published catalogue.
I won't be shopping at Maplin again.0 -
