Now if they followed me, fixed income, no product to market, I think the outcome of the 2yr challenge would have been very different.

Not having a go; but I think this is quite a defeatest attitude, there are so many things that can be done to make money. Buying from charity shops/car boots and selling on (ebay/antique bric-a-brac stores) is something that everyone can do. Admittedly this may not bring in alot; but every little helps...;)

  • Fantastic that these two managed it. If things continue in that vein they will be minted! I wish I had some skills that were as lucrative! I was wondering about the taxation issue, whether they had calculated VAT, income tax, etc. as lovely as they both were, they seemed a bit clueless accounting wise. Would have preferred to see more numbers on their business expenses and living expenses too.

Were they the first couple shown last time, or do you think the Beeb broadcast this first as they were the best success story? A tiny cynical part of me wonders why the BBC didn't choose a couple with a huge London mortgage (like me) - probably as it's mission impossible unless you have a product with a huge margin like Dan did.

As quite a few people have said, it was a bit of a letdown when Rene mentioned the tax bill they would need to calculate - not only for the sales but also for Lucy's self employment. Surely they would have to lose quite a substantial amount and reduce the total mortgage paid back.

I got the impression the mortgage and the tax was covered. The profits on the stoves that was discussed was always after tax. I think Rene was sensibly advising Dan to put the money aside for the Tax bill that may not come in for many months. It would be easy to celebrate and then realise you had spent money needed for your tax bill as they had admitted they found 'money hard'

Some might think Rene's £1500 was a cheat, but I knew he wanted one from the day he saw them and the end was the right time to buy one.

Well done, glad these two made it
  • I've just picked up this months Coast magazine and found an article about Dan and Lucy. Haven't seen any of the programmes but had just read this thread and recognised the hotpod.

I am thrilled they did it. I wonder will they go back to surfing more now that they have achieved their aim, and will they get their woodland???, there should be a no. 3 programme.

That's exactly what I was thinking as the programme ended! Series 3 would be fascinating.

We were really happy for the family and I would LOVE one of those stoves but hey!

Also found it VERY annoying, when they went to the Hearth and Home show and were being touted by different companies. Surely that was when they could have done with Rene being with them to make sure that they did not sell out too cheaply. I know they phoned him but if he was giving business advice then that must have been a crucial time for him to be there?!

Totally agree. Rene didn't seem to deliver when most needed i.e. negotiation, I thought he was of dragons den ilk and would come back with 140K for 50% of the business, stoves made in china by the 1000's for 7.99, JOB DONE now lets go surfing and watch the royalties roll in along with the waves ! Would have made for a short program though, now wheres that Dragons Den number?:money:

Really annoyed I missed this, I loved the show last year. I found it so inspiring, now I find I did nothing - although it did enable me to save for our holidays last year and a weekend away. I should try again, we only have £31,000 to find which is nothing compared to some folk - mind you on one wage that is already stretched at best, it's not that easy.
