Well I thought they did brilliantly, I hate these programs really because after each one , I come away thinking " why can't we pay offf our mortagage on 2 years" , spend ages thinking of moneymaking ideas, then realise actually in our situation its impossible! *sigh*
Anyways back to the hotpod, I wonder why they have said they are only making 350 Hotpods?0 -

Probably because you can charge a premium for a limited edition. I suspect Dan will make 350 himself and then license it for a mass-market, cheaper edition.

That sounds great. Don't forget to tell them about this site!
Perhaps some of them already visit this forum "in disguise" ! Really looking forward to your programme, by the way."By not unsettling men, you will reassure them. I thought it was excellent that Dan and Lucy had achieved what they set out to , I think they did factor in tax when they were working out the profit per pod but that doesn't cover tax to be paid on lucy's earnings. Rene mentioned a large amount for expenses to run the business etc which would come out of the tax owed to the tax man.
I was a little angry that Rene's 2 years ambition became the main focus for him despite how well the guinea pig's were doing. He was happy for Dan to try to sell his design to a manufacturer knowing how saleable the end product is and also to rope his own father into the production line when it appeared that that was not what father and son were comfortable with (I think the father was already helping on his own terms).
The production of the hotpods was not finished by the end of the program , Dan had made a contract with 2 retailers to supply them with a certain amount of hot pods and that was factored in to the amount already earned.
I hope the other episodes are as good.0 -
I thought it was inspiring - even though I couldn't do two years - or have such a valuable skill - it still made me want to pay my mortgage off quicker - rather than increase it anyway!DFW No. 344
Proud to be dealing with my debts!!:T0 -
To those saying doing this is impossible, get off your backsides and think up some ideas! nothing is impossible.
With the invention of ebay, and the internet, its easier than ever to come up with a money making business in your spare time.Save save save!!0 -

The programme is now called "Did They Pay Off The Mortgage In Two Years? "
I look forward to reading all your comments - whether positive or negative.
Just an update for you - we are now 5th in the series showing on Feb 8th.0 -
I enjoyed the program last night. Fantastic that they made it and without compromising who they are.
On the ideas think of the couple where the wife was going to sell gift boxes for babies and the one where the woman bought a piece of jewellery and then started to import it and sell it. These were ideas that came out during the process of the first year, so not all the participants had a skill, craft or product when the series started.
To me this program shows that if you are willing to put the effort in you can earn more money and pay off your mortgage more quickly. The focus of the TV program probably motivated these people to try harder than if left to their own devices and it is this external motivation that I think helps ‘normal’ people to over achieve.
I don’t think the hotpod couple would have paid off their mortgage without the pressure of the program.0 -
We were really happy for the family and I would LOVE one of those stoves but hey!
As quite a few people have said, it was a bit of a letdown when Rene mentioned the tax bill they would need to calculate - not only for the sales but also for Lucy's self employment. Surely they would have to lose quite a substantial amount and reduce the total mortgage paid back.
Also found it VERY annoying, when they went to the Hearth and Home show and were being touted by different companies. Surely that was when they could have done with Rene being with them to make sure that they did not sell out too cheaply. I know they phoned him but if he was giving business advice then that must have been a crucial time for him to be there?!0
