So does anyone who has this or a similar machine have any good tips? I'm beginning to wonder if theres any benefit at all above the old pan method?

I'll add this to the existing thread, so that you can see the experiences of others :)

There's a link in there to the thread on "perfect rice"; I do mine in a pan, and it's good every time :T

Asda are doing a rice cooker for £7 at the moment (or at least they were last week). I bought one, I'd always resisted them but my boss has been going on about how fantastic his is, and I thought for £7 I might as well try it out. Well I'm converted :D The very first thing I made was pilau rice for a dinner party, by cooking the rice in stock with spices (turmeric, cumin, star anise) and it was absolutely perfect with no babysitting whatsoever.

If anyone is looking for one, the Asda one is really good and such a good price.

I'm getting the cookworks rice cooker tomorrow for hubby as he loves to cook but has a problem getting rice perfect and I can see it is clearly annoying him! lol

I have reserved one which is less than half price at £9.99 and I also have just over £3 left on a giftcard so it will be a bargain :D

I'm gonna sneek up before he's up in the morning and pick it up and hopefully get it running with rice in ready for the evening...

has anyone got any tips..is it just plain rice you do in them or can other types of flavours be added?

Thanks for any and all tips

I have one and use it several times a week, it's great! You can add any kind of flavour you wish. We regularly add things like stock, cardamom pods, fried onions, tinned tomatoes and frozen veg.

They cook it all pretty quickly too. The only downside is that it can take time playing around with the amount of water etc to get it as you like it but once this is sussed then it's fine.

I love my rice cooker. Normally when I make a curry it always starts by sweating off some onion and garlic in oil, so I'll do a bit extra and then transfer half of it to the rice cooker, add the rice, veg or chicken stock and spices like turmeric, cumin, cinnamon stick, cardamom, star anise etc (depending on what it's going with) to make a pilau rice.

I've never encountered a rice cooker myself - but i merged this with a thread on rice cookers. Do read back on the previous discussion which should help

  • I've just gotten a rice cooker in the Argos sales and have just made rice with it - came out fab. I also found lots of rice cooker recipes by googling - they range from mac 'n cheese to rice pudding to all kinds of things, and I'm wondering if others on here have any good rice cooker recipes to share? Vegetarian recipes would be most useful to me.

I am the worlds worst cook. I have been given a rice cooker but no instructions with it...its an old one so there are no instructions online. Tried to cook rice with it yesterday and must have put WAY too much water in it = totally overcooked and bloated basmati rice. Im not even sure if it is supposed to switch itself off when ready? Its a panasonic.

Is there an idiots guide to ratio of rice to water? Also if I get the hang of it can you cook risotto in them??

    Thanks

After years of disasters with rice, an Indian friend told me she uses 1 measure rice to 2 Measures water - just use the same cup, mug or jug to measure both the rice and the water

If you soak your rice in advance, you'll need a bit less.
