Hi craftingqueen.
My OH was always on at me to get one, I thought they'd be a total waste of money. He won - bought it and I honestly wouldn't be without it now!
We got a tefal 3 in one, it's a slow cooker, steamer and rice cooker. I find it so easy now and it makes cleaning after cooking the rice a simple job. I buy value rice and have started adding a tsp oil to the rice before it cooks to prevent sticking.
I cook rice pretty much every week - my children love it. I'd definitely recommend them if you have room to store it.October shopping challenge - £3000 -
Echo couteaux - we also have the Tefal 3in1. Only thing against it is you can't really steam much and , IMO, the slow cooking isn't brilliant. You can use it as a slow cooker but it seems to be at a higher temp than the slow cooker I had back in the day. I have a separate steamer because the tray in the 3in1 is so shallow.
However, it's great as a rice cooker. As with so many of these things, it's the fact you can turn it on and leave it that makes it so useful. Son No1 buys a family takeaway as a treat and we put the rice on, pick up the takeaway and it's all ready at the same time!0 -
Magentasue - agree on the steamer. I tried to steam a pack of bok choi and had to literally squeeze it all in. It was handy when doing things for my baby though.
We do exactly the same with the takeaway. I feel it would be criminal to buy steamed rice now when it's so easy in the cooker. I'm a total convert!October shopping challenge - £3000 -
I have the tefal 3 in 1 thing too.. I did my first batch of rice in it the other day and it was fabulous.. well.. it looked fabulous.. I don't like rice. Noone complained about it so it was fine!
I am yet to venture onto veg.. but it can't be that hard!!
My main braindead thing was.. do I need to put water in the steamer bit AND water in the rice bowl.. erm.. yes.. DUH!! ..LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
Hi pigpen. the veg is great out of the steamer. You can do a whole
meal in one of these. Just remember to put any meat on the bottom,
veg on the two next layers. think of all the leccy saved. 1 steamer to do everything that would normally go on 3 or 4 rings.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
I've just got a simple rice cooker - the Cookworks one from Argos which is around the 19.99 mark usually but is sometimes on offer to £9.99. (as it was when I bought it!). I love it and wouldn't be without it. The rice tastes better than when it's boiled, and you just fill it up, turn it on and forget it until you are ready! Big thumbs up from me!0

I just buy Aldi's rice and cook that in a normal saucepan ,i find it no hassle. I have a slow cooker which is great and a saucepan that you fill with water and put on the hob with two steamer pots that go on top. I dont use the slow cooker that much in the summer but the steamer is used every day. If you really think it is worth it and you will use it ,then why not!0

I've had my Cookworks one about 5 years now, and I also wouldn't be without it, despite thinking it was going to be another of Dh's gadgets!
If I can't think what to do for tea I put some rice on (it keeps it warm for an hour, so timing can be less than perfect) and then decide what to do with it!
You can add flavourings or other ingredients to the bowl within reason. I read turmeric is very good for you and bought a massive tub from an Asian shop, so we often have yellow rice! Cardamon pods make 'pilau' rice, or put drained tinned or frozen lentils/peas or sweetcorn on top to steam.
We eat lots of Chinese fried rice, Indian savoury rice (similar but with dessicated coconut, mango chutney etc), pilaffs, etc now! Good for using up odd bits left over.

I have the Tefal 3in1 - and love it. Even my hubby knows how to use it.
I cook rice alot, and never thought of buying a rice cooker, until a friend suggested it. I wanted a slow cooler so the tefal one was ideal. I've had it for years now and it is the best thing in the kitchen. In the winter I use it to make stews. I also use the steamer alot. It is a lot cheaper now. If I ever see anyone in shop looking at one - I always tell them it is worth it. Makes a good wedding present as well.0 -
I think we have the wrong rice cooker! It was one of Netto's special weekly deals that OH got on the spur of the moment for £12. Most of the rice it cooks is lovely, but it always catches on the bottom - it has a facility to keep rice warm (intended for spare rice during a meal) but we find that as the rice on the bottom has always "caught" during normal cooking time - any longer on warm and it burns. And I don't like throwing away burnt rice, what a waste!0
