  • Wouldn't the birds eat this and the glitter would then clog up their intestines & kill them> Kids wouldn't like that!
I'm getting older, and lifes getting harder!
  • Hi
We use oats and either sugar edible glitter mixed in a bag or jam jar with a poem attached
Sprinkle on your lawn at night,
The moon will make it sparkle bright.
    Santa's reindeer fly and roam,
This will guide them to your home

    or
On Christmas Eve spread Magic Reindeer Food on your lawn,
To bring Santa to your house before dawn...
The smell of the oats and glitter sparkling bright
Will guide Rudolph through the night

Hi I did this last year with my little girl, we used oats and glitter in a little tub and we coverd over the top with cling film then hung it up for rudolf to see.

We also put a carrot out for rudolf which I made look like it had been bitten the next day.

  • You can buy edible glitter from Ebay...or good confectioners.
Not a good idea to use normal glitter.

If you use real glitter whic is cheaper than eduble glitter, then how bout making the birds something they can eat so that they are not interested in the oats. As I say I put mine in a tub and hug it outside not on the grass so rudolf could sniff the oats.

I put out oats but use food colouring instead of glitter so it isnt harmful to birds.

We also poke holes in the ends of carrots and thread ribbon through then hang them outside from the hanging basket hook for rudolph. Then i send dh out to 'nibble' on them - bless him lol

We dnt have a chimney so wanted to add this, we got one of those keys that santa can use. We made a little pully system so that the elfs could get up and down with the key and we made them a little hut with a elf present in.

My daughter loved seeing that the elfs had liked there present, cause I put a little not in the hut from them. I also do this with the food for santa make it look like he had eaten some and left a note from him and rudolf saying thanks.

  • I really missed doing this sort of thing when my Daughter grew up (she is now 30)....so I sometimes still do it!!!
    Hubby thinks I'm mad!!
Always used to put out a little glass of sherry and a mince pie for Santa, and a carrot for Rudolph.
When she got up on Christmas morning, there would be nibbles out of the mince pie and carrot....but all of the sherry had been drank!!
Santa must be be very thirsty....I used to tell her.
Sometimes used to sprinkle icing sugar near the back door and get Hubby and the dog to walk in it to look like Santas and Rudolphs foot steps in snow.
Made a bit of a mess...but looks good.
Nice idea about the bird food though.....wish I had thought of that.
I'm feeling all Christmassy thinking about it.

  • We did this a few years ago too. We have a flat roof, so climbed up on the roof to sprinkle the reindeer food and the girls thought it was brilliant.

I'm feeling all christmassy too :T
