Comet and faulty dishwasher help please

I bought a dishwasher from Comet on 15th Oct paid cash. It stopped working on the 16th Nov. I rang Comet on 17th Nov, they were to send a chap out to look at it Sat 22nd (earliest they could manage). The chap rang me at 12pm on Saturday to say he'd be with me by 4pm, he then rang at 3pm to say he was stuck in traffic and wouldn't be able to make it, so he'd be with me by 5pm today. Well you know the rest, no phone call and no visit. He asked me should anybody ring from Comet would I say he had called, diagnosed the problem and was sorting it. He told me because the 28 day period is up I can't have a replacement so it means it needs to be fixed, had he have got here he had no parts to fix it and it would mean diagnosing the problem, waiting for parts and then repairing. It's taken 8 days so far and still it's not even been looked at. Yes I am washing up by hand and it's not really a hardship but if I'd have wanted to do that I'd have not bought a dishwasher.
Does anybody know if that because it broke 4 days after the 28 days I can't have a replacement?
Also when I ring Comet in the morning, I can't lie for this man can I and tell them he's been otherwise why am I ringing and how will I get anybody here?
Can anyone help or advise please?

Rebook a repair appointment.
There's no need for a new one, they'll just fix your old one.
For some reason people seem to assume that as soon as something goes wrong shops will just bin it and hand out a brand new one..."Love you Dave Brooker! x"

I'm sorry I should have gone into more detail, I don't assume anything, I'm quite happy to have it repaired but how many days should I expect to wait in for someone to call.
I'm also concerned because of these 2 reasons - I bought a gas fire, it broke in a month, had it repaired it broke again after 4 months and again after 9 months, it then lasted just over the year broke again I had to pay for it to be fixed, was told it was a fault with the ignition, I paid another 2 times after that too.
I bought a washer dryer from comet, a wire with the movement of the macine kept pulling of the dryer part and having to be replaced and replaced - another fault, the washer still works and I just bought a new dryer in the end, which I could ill afford but I also couldn't keep affording the repair bill either.
Please don't assume I want special treatment or something for nothing.
Thank you for your advice to ring and book another appointment, I was going to do that anyway.0 -
The OP never purchased a repaired machine Dave, they purchased a new one, which failed within 24 hours!! :eek:Brooker_Dave wrote: »For some reason people seem to assume that as soon as something goes wrong shops will just bin it and hand out a brand new one...
Oh, and it was from Comet
I wouldn't settle for a repair.Click here for Martins (MSE) advice on who to contact with Debt Issues - YOU HAVE NO REASON TO USE A FEE PAYING DEBT MANAGEMENT COMPANY- THEY CANNOT DO ANYMORE FOR YOU THAN THOSE LISTED IN MY LINK ABOVE.

No, they’ll send it back to the manufacture for investigation.Brooker_Dave wrote: »shops will just bin it and hand out a brand new one...Click here for Martins (MSE) advice on who to contact with Debt Issues - YOU HAVE NO REASON TO USE A FEE PAYING DEBT MANAGEMENT COMPANY- THEY CANNOT DO ANYMORE FOR YOU THAN THOSE LISTED IN MY LINK ABOVE.

Sorry Dave Brooker, but how do you know it can be repaired? Perhaps it can, but how do you know? And where things can be satisfactorily repaired, why do you assume people would not be happy with that and demand a new one?
OP, I sympathise with your predicament as it is not your fault, although with your experience of Comet you might have simply considered not shopping there again!
You certainly must not lie for the repair-man, as it compromises your position. I would certainly consult Trading Standards for some good basic legal advice about where you stand if a replacement IS necessary, and on Comet's obligations to get a repair-person to you in good time. Then I would write to Comet, presuming they have not sorted this out in the meantime (which hopefully they will have!)0 -

Hi 10past6 yes it was a new machine but it broke after 32 days. They say you can only have a replacement up to 28 days, okay if that's right no problem, I'm cool with that.
I've waited nearly a week so far to get it looked at, the bloke wants me to lie and say he's been, I've sat in for 2 days already.
How can I lie for him if I have to ring and get someone to come out cos he's not been, what if it takes another week to get someone to come out and look at it. What if it's another fault that's going to happen again and again.0 -

Hi 10past6, I know you're one of the good guys so I hesitate to pull you up, I think you've read one of the OP's dates wrong, it actually failed just over a month after.
I'd rather it was me to tell you than Mr Brooker, whose riposte might be rather smugger, even though he's still losing the argument...0 -
Opps, Can anyone see my red face  :rotfl: :rotfl:Hi 10past6, I know you're one of the good guys so I hesitate to pull you up, I think you've read one of the OP's dates wrong, it actually failed just over a month after.

Thank you Uganda, it was a genuine mistake, and before anyone starts a dispute, I only do disputes with financial institutions

Thank you uganda, yes in hindsight you are right re shopping elsewhere, we didn't have much money and it seemed good at the time.
I just am concerned how long it will take to fix bearing in mind parts need ordering and getting a man back to repair it when I can't even get someone to come and look at it.
Also maybe I'm just old but you just don't expect things to completely pack up after 32 days of use also if it packs up after 32 days what's it going to be like after 6 months, bearing in mind I seem to have a knack in buying products which have a design flaw
I hate for people to think I want something for nothing, that makes me very mad. Please don't anyone think I want payment for sitting in and waiting either for non arrival, I just want people to be fair with me, if they'd have said we can't come out for a fortnight, I'm soft I'd have just rolled over and accepted it.0 -

Obviously this is why a repair man goes out, he will either order parts/repair it or authorize a refund. It is definitely a rare thing when the service staff doesn't turn up, but i understand it doesn't make it any better for you.
Also you can't lie and say he has been because if he had, he would of given you a number which you would then quote to the store.
It is always better if possible to have direct contact with your local store, regardless of where you bought it, as they can contact any service centre etc directly on your behalf0
