Hi, this is the Daily Thread for Sunday 23rd of November. It is is an ‘over the garden fence’ type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone is welcome; please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!
As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred.
When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.
Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “Hi everyone, hope you are all well” type start does just as well.
Morning everyone!
It was a cold night here and it's now a cold morning, but no frost or snow so far thank goodness.
Mioliere and Redruby – Thank you and I will pass the hugs on Tristan – he should be online shortly.
Redruby – I don’t have a personal recipe for Mulligatawny soup but found this one that looks really tasty http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/database/jennysmulligatawnyso_71379.shtml
N9eav – we have been hoping for some early Turkey deals too for Christmas Day but no luck anywhere. They do say there are a lot less turkeys around this year thanks to the Bird flu scare at a well known turkey farm in the summer. We may have to think of another joint to have as we need a HUGE turkey and certainly can’t afford the prices I have seen lately.
Squiggly – made the oxtail casserole in the slow cooker yesterday and looking forward to having it tonight with new potatoes just harvested from our garden! Hope your flu is getting better hon – my OH had it last week and is now full of cold.
Penpin – Really glad that they are managing to control the pain better for you now.
dlb – good to see you back on the daily thread!
Smokybabe – I know there is nothing anyone can say to make you feel any better but I am thinking of you and sending you huge hugs. I really hope you get some help with your eldest and all his acting out.
Well, the price of Oxtail has definitely risen since I bought it last – I paid double what I normally pay, but it used to be ridiculously cheap so I guess now it’s just the demand for it that has made the prices rise.
Couldn’t dry the washing yesterday as the lodger was catching up with her washing and drying, so today will have to be laundry day. We also have house sorting to do if the OHs’ cold allows him to be able to lift and carry.
I was looking thru the Argos catalogue the other day and they had a kettle contraption thing that only takes 3secs to heat a mug of water and costs (they say) 1/3rd of the electricity of a normal kettle. From memory it was about £48 so a big outlay… what I wanted to ask was, does anyone have one of these? I have a few Argos vouchers that need to be spent, so was considering it, if it saves money in the end.
to all who want them today and
to all those not feeling well.

To be frugal, you need to spend money wisely, simply spending less is not enough.

Morning. I have been having a mare this morning trying to get on to AOL to check my e-mail, as I could not access this site as my password failed. I had to get a new password through my old aol account and well needless to say it was not working. I eventually cleared the cookies and it all worked again.... I don't understand computers much.
Off to work soon. I was late home last night as we had a job running. I picked up a huge chinese meal on the way home and ate that at 8pm. Nice.
2 days running I have been overcharged by ASDA. Each time for price promotions that do not come up on the till. A huge display of Flora yesterday at £1 came up as £1.68. I got my money back and a £2 gift card, but how many people have been ripped off!!!!!!
That's 3 times in 3 shopping trips now.
Daughter got accepted for audition on Brtitains got talent yesterday. Trouble is it's on a Monday (school day) I am working, it's one weeks time and it's 250 miles away in Cardiff. Hmmmm. I don't want to blow her dreams, but It might be too much to pay when I have not even heard any singing....
Oh the joys of being Dad! OH popped in ASDA last night just before closing(the one that rips people off) to get a B'day card for her sister and was given 4 French sticks for free and bought 7 packs of very nice ham for 2p each Yes 2p from £2.69. That will make up for my overpriced Flora.
Cheers and have a nice dayNO to pasty tax We won!!!! Just shows that people power works! Don't be apathetic to your cause!0 -
Good morning all.
Smoky - sending heartfelt (((hugs))) to you and the LOs. I think you are right to look for ways to help your DS. You are all going through such a lot and it is still very early days but you sound as if you are on the right track and things WILL start to feel better. I admire how well you are coping.
Well, it's absolutely freezing here today so I have finally had to dig out all my warmest jumpers and cardigans. I don't think we'll be going anywhere today. DH was supposed to be working but that has been postponed until tomorrow. At least I'll be able to do the roast at lunchtime.
Oops - better go; my phone's ringing.

I was bad yesterday - spent nearly all of it on the laptop. Must do better today.
Early service at 8am, then I need to crack on with DGD's quilt, empty the ironing basket, bake bread and do some filing. Also need to sort out a couple of shelves in the larder.
Very cold here!

Morning all- hope everyone is cozy and warm this morning! No snow here just cold and wet! Dh as taken the big dog for his walk I shall take the tearaway Pug later!
My little boy decided that just cos it was Sunday it didn't mean a lie in so up since 6.45!!!
Need to do a food shop this morning (was supposed to do it yesterday but never happened!).
After that dh needs to chop more wood for the fire and empty the grate.
I shall be hoovering and dusting upstairs and making more bread once we have done the food shop(out of flour!).

Hope everyone has a good day- warm ((((hugs))) to those who need them!0 -
Morning all,
doesn't seem too cold here (but then I don't seem to feel it as much as some people anyway). I want snow...but only when I don't have to go out or drive around in it!!!
Diva, thank you - am feeling much better than I was, although it's taken a good couple of weeks. Tell your OH not to do too much!!! Do butchers usually have oxtails available or is it something you have to ask them for a few days before?
N9eav, I never find bargains like that in Asda. Or Mr T, or anywhere come to thatThe YS stuff I always see has about 20p knocked off the original price...
Halight, will have a look at that thread about the meat then thank you!
Smoky, I'm sorry things are so tough for you right now - are you still getting support from family around you? And perhaps being able to offload to someone who isn't involved will be good for your eldest? My 16 yr old DD has just been having some counselling for a few weeks, and think it has helped her. She doesn't have to consider that what she's saying could upset the person as they're not in the middle of the situation, so she can tell them exactly how she feels. It gets it out of her head - and maybe that will help your eldest. (((((((((((huge hugs))))))))))) to all of you.
Just going to start typing some of my letters for the office, did it at this time last week & it's quite good (house quiet, not much else to do). Had to go into town for a bit yesterday PM & it was manic - I am not going anywhere near it on a weekend until after Xmas now!!!! Later I will dig out the Xmas stuff & see what's there (think we need new lights).
Also need to hoover everywhere, mop kitchen floor, unload DW, and sort dinner!
(((((((((hugs)))))))))) for all those needing them.Live your life until love is found, or love's gonna get you down" (credit to Mika!)0 -
Morning everyone
Arrived back from holidays yesterday morning...so haven't been around for a while. I haven't had time to catch up on the posts yet....so hope everyone is warm and happy. The snow woke me this morning pattering on the bedroom windows....it's only a light covering...but it's so cold!
Holiday washing to finish today and then the ironing...yeucch! Have invited all the family around today....cos I've missed them so much and instead of Sunday roast, I'm doing a big lasagne...which should keep them all happy. Lots of home-made pasta sauce in the freezer from all the tomatoes I was given in the summer, so will use that. Apple crumble's or pies for pudding I think...they always go down well don't they?
I have decided that I'm not going to think about Christmas anymore til next week!! :rotfl: Have got quite a few presents stashed away for the grandchildren and most of the others for daughters and son-in-laws....so going to check what I've got first. Our spare bedroom looks like Santa's Grotto anyway....the DD's bring all the presents here to wrap...it's got to be a bit of a tradition over the last 5 years...and we love having our girlies home for a couple of evenings...it's lovely to hear them laughing and giggling over the things they have bought their children.
I finally plucked up the courage to ask alot of the Old Style members on FaceBook to be my friend....Had lots of replies...so thank you (I've just got to connect names with people on here now).
Right I better go...DH is still snoring...and I need another cuppa
Hope you all have a lovely day
xx
Quick update....it's heaving down with snow now....kids will be happy !A family that eats together, stays together
