    I need to read back through the thread as I'm sure one of you mentioned perhaps an adobe program running a scan, this may be relative the the "page faults" column I have in processes perhaps as it is listing an incredibly high number of page errors for firefox, ie and ZLclient (whatever that is.)

    think ZLclient is part of the Zone Alarm suite, if I'm not mistaken...

    ok done this no change apart from switching the sound off on screens already running.

    By the way thanks to all of you for your help so far, system is running much much faster, firefox only crashing occasionally now also.

    I have just picked up "tune up utilities" when searching system for "firewall" and am currently uninstalling this as it is 2007 version anyway.

    When trying to uninstall "catwoman" game it is telling me there is already an installation in progress although I know there is not.

    Did you try switching off 'windows defender' ?

    If so then its looking like it may be a fault with XP somewhere

    One other thing to try is to goto WINDOWS UPDATE
    select CUSTOM
    then HARDWARE
    update all hardware (if any can be)

    download and install the latest flash player for BOTH IE and firefox
    http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/

    (as in, open with firefox download and run. Then again using Internet Explorer)
