I agree the money is to encourage teenagers to stay on to get better grades.
My daughter stayed on at school for 2 years and recieved EMA. This was an added bonus as she would have stayed on anyway. She got 4 grade A A Levels at the end of 6th form.
She then went onto do a college course. The course was alot further away and she would have used the money for bus fayers and books e.c.t that she needed.Unfortunately as she wasn't paid it until a few days ago that wasn't to be.
I think it is a good incentive for the teenagers to stay on into further education. Far better them get up to £30.00 a week and they are doing something constructive than staying at home with no job. That doesn't do anyone any good.
In a perfect world we would all be able to leave school at 16 and find a job that we want to do and be paid for it. Life isn't like that unfortunately.
My daughter also had different part time jobs even though they were low paid ones.
Spacerider I for one am grateful that your daughter is able to carry on with her studies and not have to worry about getting a job as well.
I'd be a lot better off finanicially if my parents split up. I lose out on quite a bit of money just cause they are still married. That 30 quid a week would have been very handy indeed.
Of course (as seen in this thread) there are cases for it, but I've met very few to date I agree with.
Stay on at school, get a job and work hard. That's what the rest of us had to do.0
