One of my relatives is an area manager, another relative work for a company who supplies them..... they are on credit block because they haven't paid bills!!
    Ah right, fair enough.
Still pretty much the first I've heard of it... and I work for Woolworths myself

There is some hope if what The Times says is true though...
    From: http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/industry_sectors/retailing/article5238331.ece
Woolworths' banks have been ordered back to the negotiating table to find a way to save the struggling retailer, by a senior government minister in the department run by Lord Mandelson.

    Or maybe not... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7751064.stm
    *sigh*
  • I went in to the one in Sheffield today.
It was busy and everything seemed normal. The staff said that they just had to carry on and wait and see...

BHS is owned by Arcadia (who owns Top Shop, Top Man, Burtons, Dorothy Perkins and a few others) - I can't see it going anywhere soon.

sb44 - MFI was bought out by Magnet and should keep trading albeit with a smaller amount of stores (if I remember right - I could be wrong)
And Woolworths is still in talks according to BBC - shares have been suspended, but that is often normal when a company is involved in takeover talks.
in peterborough, dorothy perkins, burtons and evans have all been closed down and now have small departments in BHS.........maybe they will be having problems soon

 On Sky news now, 6.35pm, Woolies going into Administration.

    http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/Business/High-Street-Chain-Woolworths-Is-To-File-For-Administration-After-Rescue-Talks-Fail/Article/200811415161835?lpos=Business_Carousel_Region_1&lid=ARTICLE_15161835_High_Street_Chain_Woolworths_Is_To_File_For_Administration_After_Rescue_Talks_Fail

Says stores open on Thursday and salaries will be paid on Friday.

My heart goes out to all of those whose familes work for Woolies, this isn't what anyone wants at anytime but not just before Christmas.
  • What of online orders? I ordered a few things from them last week so does everyone expect that they'll be honoured?

I know you are covered if you use a credit card to order things but I think it only covers you for over £100 per transaction.

Best you give the Citizens Advice a ring tomorrow, if you can get through, I imagine they will be busy. MFI have requested to go into administration as well (see Sky News) so I think the CAB will be inundated with calls and visitors.

I'm wondering the same. I've got two things on order, one says order been fulfilled, the other says the same thing it's said for ages so I thought I'd cancel it but when I try it goes to a not found page. They haven't taken my money yet though. Not sure why one of my items would have been sent when they haven't got my money

I really feel for the staff, how sad for this to happen, particularly at Christmas time. Is there no hope of saving Woolworths?
  • i have voucher to buy my dd bday present got tommorrow afternoon off to go there shopping will they still be open for me to buy it ? other wise i got £50 of vouchers and no bday present for her
