I bought a jar from Tesco last week, it was in the aisle where all the Food Doctor and gluten free stuff is usually stacked. Not cheap but it's organic virgin cold pressed. It's great on my skin and I love the smell and taste of it.

I think Sainsburys stock it too.

I almost bought this earlier from Tesco but thought it seemed expensive so decided to do a bit of research first. Having read this thread, I might buy it, since I like the groovy food company. I've bought their 'cool oil' a few times, and when we used it regularly, as suggested (think it was a tbsp a day..) it made our hair and nails shine. Rather pricey though, especially with that usage , so haven't used for quite a while.

I've got a box with 3 big bags of oil/butter in it upstairs: one coconut oil, one shea butter and and cocoa butter. I mix them with olive oil and use it as a cream, and it's wonderful, though I don't use it as often as I should.
I've had it a while now though (prob. 2 or 3 years...), so probably not sensible to start eating it :rotfl:, so I want some for cooking with. Don't fancy signing up for yet another website

I've just bought Parachute 100% pure edible coconut oil from Spices of India. Its pressed from sun-dried coconut kernels then micro-filtered. Not tried it yet.

I've used coconut oil as a body moisturiser before. I had a fling with an Egyptian airline pilot who had a thing about coconut shampoo etc on women..

My feet led me into a couple of health food shops today. Bought a 460g tub of Coconoil for £8.90 after almost fainting at the prices of the ones in H&B (~£16!).

It has slight coconut smell and I think the taste is more smell than taste.. if I didn't smell it, I don't think I'd even notice it..

    :)

Cooked my lunch in coconut oil. It was solid and wouldn't pour so I had to spoon it into the pan. It didn't smell much but when I tasted it, I did feel that there was a definite taste of coconut whereas the ghee was a more neutral taste. I'd happily cook fried eggs and mushrooms in ghee (mine doesn't have ethyl butyrate) but I wouldn't do that with coconut oil. So I may just use coconut oil when making curries and Middle Eastern food.

On the other hand, while I was waiting for my food to cook, I did rub in a small amount of coconut oil on my forearms and they have stayed silky smooth and scented since :)

When adding to coffee, use a milk frother to 'atomise' the coconut oil. Aerolatte (ten pounds or less) is the one I use. Produces a coffee that is 'foamed' like a latte, even before you add milk!. Search YouTube for 'butter coffee' to see a variant on this.

If you're making for larger group, there are larger milk frothers out there.

If you add cold milk, you can down it pretty quickly. If you want to savour it, pre-heat a bit of milk in the microwave for half-a-minute.

You can even add butter, as long as it's salt-free from grass-fed cows. Coffee made this way is a meal in itself and will keep you going for hours before having to eat.

Don't put all the coffee in at once. You'll need to froth about a third of a cup to avoid splashing. Add the rest of the coffee when you've removed the frother.

I used bog-standard instant coffee. My favourite brand is the expensive Carte Noir but I've used Gold Blend and it's pretty 'gourmet' in my opinion.

Hi everyone Im looking for a strong smelling coconut oil for cosmetic purposes - Im understanding it should be virgin or unrefined...can anyone recommend a good one? Alternatively could you use a refined one for the moisturising and add a coconut smell to it? thanks
  • I've been using coconut oil since last year. I consume some neat and use refined coconut oil for cooking. If you don't like the smell/taste, try the refined oil because it has a lot less taste and smell! I use the refined oil for frying and it tastes fine cooking eggs, fish, bacon etc. In fact the slight taste of the refined oil adds to the taste of eggs and makes them taste very nice IMO.

I wouldn't buy from any of the supermarkets or H&B, I get mine from Naissance. The prices are a lot better.

  • They do a variety of different grades if you persist with their website.

Coconut RBD - Certified Organic Vegetable & Carrier Oils - size: 25kg £88.50
Coconut - Vegetable, Carrier & Other Oils- size: 25kg £77.50
Coconut Virgin - Certified Organic Vegetable & Carrier Oils - size: 25kg £130.00

There is VAT and carriage £10 50 on top but Certified Organic comes to £149.50 + £10.50=£160 for 25kg or £3.20 a pot.

Do note this is not sold as food grade but as your skin is permeable whatever you put on your skin will almost certainly (unless it's particle size as used in some sunblocks is too large) be absorbed and detectable in your urine within hours so if it's safe to use on the skin it's probably safe to use for cooking. I'll let you know next week what it tastes like.

RBD is Refined, Bleached and Deodorized so not something which you would really want to be consuming. The Vegetable oil is also not food grade and like many sellers they can keep the price low by not going to food grade standards.

The Virgin Organic sounds better but the price has skyrocketted since then and now costs more than it does at coconutty if you use the 5% discount code COCO5 and cocconutty gives free delivery. That is where I purchased my last from and although I got far more than 25Kg, approx 27-28Kg, it has not lasted as long as I had hoped........I have been getting through it so quickly, I hope that the saturated fat has continued to heal my nervous system which it was doing earlier on. My irises had improved quite noticeably but I have not looked recently.

Purchasing with a group of friends might make it more manageable. It works out at about £8.20/Kg rather than around £13.00/Kg.
  • What a great thread. I'm sad to see it's not been posted on a while so I'm bumping it up.

Does anyone else use coconut oil and think it's fab?
