Charged for calling a uk mobile whilst IT was abroad!!

Options
Hey Guys,

I was charged for calling a UK mobile (+447797******) because the OTHER guy was in the Isle of Man. This was classified as an International call.

I thought that I could phone any UK mobile number (even if it was anywhere in the world) with me paying the UK part and THEM paying the 'abroad' part? This is because I have no clue whatsoever where I am calling when calling a mobile. (As opposed to a land-line call, when I will always know by the prefix, e.g. +48).

Otherwise, what is the point of THEM paying to receive calls whilst abroad?

Of course, T Mobile have 'run out' of literature that proves, or disproves this!

This is not an issue of being charged because mobile you called was roaming, you were charged because this is a Jersey Telecom mobile. You would have been charged for calling this code wherever the person was, even if they weren't roaming. Calling numbers local to Jersey, Guernsey and Isle of Man seem to not be included in many plans, it may not be fair, but that's just how it is unfortunately.
  • When I spoke to T-Mobile, they confirmed that it was exactly the same if I called my pal on +447977****** and he was in another country. This was not just an issue with Jersey Telecom.

Three customer service agents, including a 'manager', told me that my calls to UK mobile numbers would accrue an additional charge simply because they *may* be abroad!

I can't find anything on the OfCom website - or indeed T-Mobile website about calling mobiles that are in a different country.

That's exactly what the previous reply says - you'll be charged by T-mobile for calls to Jersey mobiles wherever they are.

Ofcom won't have any comments about different costs for calling to UK mobiles in other countries, as it makes no difference where the other phone is.
  • Sorry Redux,

    I didn't make myself clear.

My other-halfs number is registered with T-mobile in London (a UK mobile number).

T-Mobile assure me that if I call from my London registered mobile number when they are in the UK, I will not be charged (other than my inclusive minutes). However, if I call them the next day, on the same mobile number, and they have gone on holiday - I will pay International rates to speak to them.

This cannot be the case - how can a person know where they are ringing?

You're misquoting T-mobile, or at least asking the wrong questions and not listening to what they said.

What they've told you is that you'll be charged for calling this Jersey number wherever it is. You're the one claiming 07797x is a UK number, not them; it cannot be a T-mobile number, as porting is impossible across country boundaries.
  • Hi,

This seems wrong in my experience. Traditionally, you are correct that if a UK mobile owner is abroad, then it is that person that pays the international part of the call, not you the caller. So saying ,due to recent decisions by EU regulators, we've all benefited from cheaper international calls within the EU and many networks have proposed that to compensate for the lost revenue, they may have to pass on the cost of routing the calls through a foreign network to the callers. I'm not aware that changes had gone through, but I haven't upgraded for a little while. I would ask how long you have had your contract with the network and do you have a copy. If you don't the store you got it from may have one.
  • Sorry again Redux,

Forget the confusion over Jersey Telecom.

Imagine I call you tonight and you're at home - my call is included in my free minutes.

You go to Spain tomorrow, my call is charged at International rates coz you're abroad.

This is exactly what T-mobile is suggesting. My argument is that I cannot know where a person is when I call them.

I would think I have had my contract for 8 months.

    This is absolutely untrue.

Perhaps you're making it up from the confusion about the Jersey number, or what, I really don't know, but you have no argument whatsoever against something that simply does not happen. .
