  • Is it just eBay and Hotmail, or any secure site (https://), e.g. online banking?

Cant log into online banking so it must be secure sites too
  • A couple more for you to think about..........
I see from your list above that you are running an NTL programme called Broadband Medic - I used to use one provided by Onetel and found it was completely cocking up my machine - took it off an hey no problem.
You also still have Norton loaded and running - previous posts suggested you take it off and gave you a link to help do it - I AGREE with that as you are running all sorts of other diagnostic and warning software I bet it is contributing to the problems - it is invidious and seems able to replicate itself unless you remove it thoroughly and properly - look at the link given in previous posts.
    Cheers

  • Have a look at a very similar problem described at the Symantec website. Summary: get Norton off your system.

    SJB
  • Thanks again to all who have helped.

Right, I seem too have finally got rid of Norton and its files that were causing 100% CPU usage (Fingers crossed)

But, I still have this issue with not being able to log into a secure internet page (ie, hotmail, myeBay, online banking etc)

Can anyone help? I dont know whether its linked to the previous problem but any suggestions will be great - THANKS!

Try getting the latest java updates plus make sure you got shot of norton firewall aswell I would get Kerio as a firewall......

    http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm Firewall

    http://www.java.com/en/ Click on download Now.
  • Have a look in Internet Explorer Tools menu - Internet Options which will bring up a small screen with tabs on top including Security and Privacy - you may have these set too high.
Otherwise - check settings on your firewall Ithink you said you you had ZoneAlarm - are you also running XP Firewall may be either set too high or conflicting.
If you are connecting to the WWW then it is most likely one such setting

Theres a ton of stuff to try here - don't know how effective it will be.

    http://www.duxcw.com/faq/win/xp/secure.htm

You could also download and install Firefox to see if it can get to secure sites, could just be IE messed up

Theres a SSL check from verisign here

    http://www.verisign.com/advisor/check.html
  • Hi, A MASSIVE thanks to all. Intel, the java updates seem to have sorted out the problem with secure sites - Thanks!

Much appreciated again, and I will let you know if there are any more problems
