While still in the Windows folder, look for a folder called Temp. Go into that, and delete everything possible in there. If it says it's being used by another program, then best to leave it.

Now left click your Start menu button - usually at the top, it will have the username you're logged in to Windows as. So it might be Jo1972, or Joesph. Whatever, just remember the name.

Now left click Local Disk (C:) in the left hand side of Windows Explorer. Click the Documents and Settings folder. Now let's say the username you found on the menu was Jo1972 - then click on Jo1972, or whatever the name saw on the Start Menu was.

Mmm, lots of weird looking folders, eh? :D The one you want, is called Local Settings, so click that, then find a folder called Temp in that. Again, delete everything possible in there.

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply :)

I've done everything up until the point above. I opened the temp file and the 'Jo1972' file in the docs & settings folder but there is so much stuff in there and I have no idea what I'm deleting. Can I delete it all or is there stuff in there that helps the system run?

You can delete everything in the Temp folder including sub directories as they are just temporary files. System files are not stored in temp folders. How much free hard drive space is showing now?

  • Hi. I've a similar prob with space but crapcleaner came up with loads of stuff - lots of which had warnings asking me to view it before deleting ! I also don't know what to delete and if I delete it one by one I'l be years getting rid of it.
SO ............ any advise on a (fairly ) quick fix?

I can try to do all of the above but am still concerned I'm going where no one has gone before and will end up with an even more crap slow pc.
Kindly advise please to a thicko.

Basically, Temp files are just temporary files that programs make for temporary usage - but a lot often forget to delete the files. Not good. :D

It is quite safe to delete the files and folders in the Temp folder. I've never had a bad experience deleting them.

You need to delete gigabytes -lots!- have you got any video on your laptop?
If you don't use windirstat you can open my computer/c-drive and then hold the cursor over each item to see how large it is - let us know how big things are.
    Aim for 25% free space.

37.2GB is the capacity of the drive, how much it's capable on handing.

Earlier on, you only had 195MB free space - which is really 0.19GB (you divide by 1024). Now you have 2.57GB, so it sounds like my post has freed up 2.38GB space for you to use.

To put it another way, 2.57GB of a 37.2GB drive equates to only 6.9% free space on your disk.

That probably sounds good, but ideally we want about 10GB free.

Get ready for this - this is what I'd select for removal from HiJackThis:
    • O2 - BHO: Pop-Up Blocker BHO - !!3C060EA2-E6A9-4E49-A530-D4657B8C449A} - C:\Program Files\Virgin Broadband\PCguard\pkR.dll

    • O4 - Startup: OpenOffice.org 2.2.lnk = C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org 2.2\program\quickstart.exe
    • O23 - Service: Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service (aawservice) - Lavasoft - C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware\aawservice.exe
    • O23 - Service: Google Updater Service (gusvc) - Google - C:\Program Files\Google\Common\Google Updater\GoogleUpdaterService.exe
    • O23 - Service: Virgin Broadband PCguard Update Service (RPSUpdaterR) - Radialpoint Inc. - C:\Program Files\Virgin Broadband\PCguard\rpsupdaterR.exe

Now I'm not sure if you've got PC Guard firewall from Virgin installed or not. If so, don't delete any of the PC Guard options.

As soon as you've removed them with HijackThis, uninstall the following:
    • Google Toolbar
    • MSN Search Toolbar
    • AOL Toolbar
    • Lavasoft Ad-Aware
I'm expecting you to ask why I want you to install Ad-Aware, and rightly so you should query why I'd want you to uninstall a program which seemingly remove spyware.

It is of my opinion, Ad-Aware is slow, comercialised and unreliable. I've not had to use it for a long time now - I use Spybot:S&D and Malwarebytes' to remove spyware these days. I can't think of a situation where these have failed me yet.

Personally I use google toolbar daily as my favourites are saved to it and I can sign in on any computer

Also, none of that lot is really going to create any more space (Certainly not gigabytes)

Perhaps the OP should start looking at files theyve saved? Music and videos in particular and think about saving them to disc to free up hard drive space?
