I can't get this damn thing working.

I have got my PC linked to the modem/router via ethernet and can load the routers settings via my browser, but I can't for the life off me connect to the internet.

I am with pipex, and have tried the reccomended settings but it just doesn't seem to work.

    Any tips anybody?

I'm not with Pipex but you might want to try turning the power off for 30secs to the router once you have changed the settings, worked for me!
When i first tried the green internet l.e.d. on the router refused to light, or went red(went red when i tried RFC 2364 PPPoA setting).
Settings I used were: RFC2516 PPPoE, LLC, Auto detect disabled with VPI 0, VCI 38. My username & password.
  • I presume you have a PC wired to the router directly but can't access the internet with this. If so, have you updated your connection settings in IE so that you are set to 'never dial a connection' and use your LAN connection instead?

Btw - if you do get it working it's worth upgrading the software on the router and on the wireless PC you will be using the supplied card with.

    Go to:

    http://www.linksys.com/
    click on Support/Techical support
search in 'easy answers' for 'How to Upgrade the Firmware on a Linksys Router'
You can get the downloads for the router and the card on that site

Also search for 'Unable to access Internet, WAN IP Address present' - this may help. Good luck!

If you get a wifi router then that should be able to be plugged into the ethernet port of your new cable modem, and err... plugged into your Asdl modem if that has an ethernet port?, or do they use usb input?. My cable modem has both.
Maybe this is only of help in the future, wish I hadn't started.

    ADSL modem is only USB.

After a bit of advice folks - have bought a wireless media player to stream the music on my PC to my Hi-Fi downstairs. Currently on ADSL, but too far from exchange to get above 512, will be going cable in about 7 weeks (contract with current ISP ends).
What can I do to get hooked up in the meantime? If I buy and ADSL modem/firewall/router/access point then it becomes redundant as soon as I go cable.

What are my options and can anyone recommend a bit of kit.

    Thanks.
    Hi Chuffy
The simple answer is yes, your ADSL modem/router will become redundant when you go cable. Given you've only got 7 weeks left, I'd wait.

What you need is a broadband router, sometimes described confusingly as a DSL router (note no "modem"). This will generally have a WAN port and 4 LAN ports. You plug your WAN port into the settop box or the cable modem then your computer(s) into the LAN.

Your best bet is something like this: http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/852034

but obviously in true moneysaving style, shop around a bit for the cheapest! :D Personally I've gone with the Belkin Pre N solution.

or get a decent router from https://www.uroam.com

and there routers allow you to configure where your wan interface is ie ethernet o or internal adsl modem

  • Any ISP is better than AOL. You could get the Linksys working with your current AOL connection with a bit of technical fiddling but sooner or later it would end in tears. You're right to bale out now.

If you ignore their software, AOL provide a top notch, completely unlimited connection. Certainly this can't be said for Plus.net who keep changing their T&Cs...

    Chuffy,

The router hobo suggests is the one I was going to suggest when I realised it would not connect to your current modem, and it was £52 the other day. grrr

However the fact that it comes with a "free" wi-fi usb adapter, probably means you could connect the usb adapter to your ADSL modem and get the router to access the internet that way round. I would give it a try, though someone will quickly tell you if Ive got it wrong.

  • I took advantage of this £39.99 offer on New Years Day. However, as I am on Telewest Blueyonder Cable Broadband the ADSL kit would obviously not work (I knew this full well)

So when the offer had finished, I took the unit back to PC World on the 4th Jan and said my parents had bought me the wrong kit for xmas but I didnt have the receipt (small fib!!)

The guy asked me when they bought it and I said just before xmas. He said ok if you'd like to choose a broadband wireless router and anything else you need I will exchange it upto a value of £79.99.

So I went and got a Linksys speedbooster wireless cable router (the one on special offer with free USB adapter - which I dont need) and a carbus adapter for my laptop for £80.

I will now sell the USB adapter on ebay, should go for around £20. So all in all I managed to get the router & laptop card for around a net cost of £20. Now thats what I call a bargain!!

Apologies for not letting people know this offer earlier, my netgear router packed up (hence the purchase) and couldnt get online without alot of hassle.

Sorry to get on my high horse but this sounds more than just "a small fib" - more like deception.
