Do NOT be misled by AOL. You CAN use it - see my message earlier in this thread - #30. Set one up for a friend before Xmas!
Whether AOL say you 'MAY' use it is another issue but PHYSICALLY and LOGICALLY it'll work.
The only finesse I'd add to that earlier 'how to' message #30 is -use a SUBORDINATE a/c & password (set one up if you haven't done so already) ie NOT your master a/c & password - remember to keep the password 8 characters or less - as that will facilitate multiple PCs/people being on line through their AOL a/c's simultaneously. And don't forget the MTU setting!

Any ISP is better than AOL. You could get the Linksys working with your current AOL connection with a bit of technical fiddling but sooner or later it would end in tears. You're right to bale out now.
I'm pleased with Plusnet at £14.99 for an efficient uncapped 2 meg connection. If you decide to go with that please put mollymo as your referrer. Have also had reasonable service and prices from Wanadoo and Onetel.0 -

I would also recommend Plusnet - excellent customer service and reliable connection too.0 -

If you do change to another supplier, go via one of the points/cashback sites as you can get up to £25 for just signing up via their linksac's lovechild0 -
After a bit of advice folks - have bought a wireless media player to stream the music on my PC to my Hi-Fi downstairs. Currently on ADSL, but too far from exchange to get above 512, will be going cable in about 7 weeks (contract with current ISP ends).
What can I do to get hooked up in the meantime? If I buy and ADSL modem/firewall/router/access point then it becomes redundant as soon as I go cable.
What are my options and can anyone recommend a bit of kit.
Thanks.0 -
I can't get this damn thing working.
I have got my PC linked to the modem/router via ethernet and can load the routers settings via my browser, but I can't for the life off me connect to the internet.
I am with pipex, and have tried the reccomended settings but it just doesn't seem to work.
Any tips anybody?0 -
If you get a wifi router then that should be able to be plugged into the ethernet port of your new cable modem, and err... plugged into your Asdl modem if that has an ethernet port?, or do they use usb input?. My cable modem has both.Chuffy wrote:After a bit of advice folks - have bought a wireless media player to stream the music on my PC to my Hi-Fi downstairs.
