I had two Netgear routers that I had to send back for various annoying reasons. I also had a 3Com that had to go back.

The best wireless ADSL modem router i've used to date is the Speedtouch 580. It just stays on and works perfectly.

If I were you I would take back the £65 pound bundle. Im presuming that you already have Wifi built into a laptop. If this is standard 54G there will be no real speed benefit in having the model with speedboost as it most likley wont be compatable with your current setup (will only work with Speedboost equipment). Although the £65 router may have a few more upgraded tweaks I dont think it would be worth it.

PS I dont really think you can go wrong with Linksys, its part of Cisco which builds of the worlds best network equipment

yeah it is part of cisco but there home stuff not to the same build at all,

i went through alot of routers netgear linksys speedtouch and 3com belkin

speedtouch 580 no probs nice product just dint trust the brand

    belkin, crashed under pressure

    linksys crashed under pressure

netgear seemed to handle it with a slowdown rather then a crash,

but then again ask yourself what am i gona use it for ?

just browsing occasional file download gaming etc then they are all ok,

however if your goin to be maxing it out alot of concurrent connections etc and want advance features like network authentication dedicated dmz ports email server vpn servers and endpoints etc then look for a more upmarket router,

but from my experience not speaking by what ive heard or read on a forum,

best thing to do is work out what yoru gona use it for and take it form there

If you had "no probs" with the Speedtouch and it was a "nice product" than what didn't you "trust" about the brand?

Speedtouch is a very large manufacturer that mainly supplies direct to ISP's.

I would bet good money you could get this deal today.

I just ordered a printer which was in the same newspaper ad and half price YESTERDAY. I got yersterday's price after complaining their purchasing system was going up and down. Even their telephone buying service has gone up and down today.

For the record I posted the Epson Printer deal on this forum a few moments ago.

  • Apologies if it is a very basic question..

I have an old Packard bell m/c which is not wireless and I have recently brought a Dell m/c with wireless technology. I am having an AOL broadband connection(512 mps).

I'm thinking of buying this product as it will solve both of my problems. Can you advise whether I'm right?

I can use the PCMCIA card that comes with this LINKSYS to my old Packard bell m/c and make it as a wireless machine.

By using the modem that comes with this I can access broadband in both of my machines using wireless technology.

You can only use the bundled PC Card/PCMCIA in your old PBell machine IF that has a PC Card/PCMCIA slot - they are typically only found in PORTABLE PCs ie Laptops. It's VERY unusual for a desktop/tower PC case to include that functionality.

Although AOL only officially support a couple of Wireless Gateways it's actually very easy to set up kit such as this Linksys to use with AOL:
    - set ADSL encapsulation to PPPoA
    - set Multiplexing to VC
    - set virtual circuits VPI to 0 and VCI to 38
    - enter AOL username in LOWERCASE @ aol.com (and NOT parental restricted)
    - enter password (must be 8 characters or less!!!) in lowercase
    - set MTU to 1400
and you'll very likely be on first time.

  • Hi

Can someone please help me. I bought one of these and cant get it to work. It wont recognise the connection from the pc to the router. Its a yellow cable that the instructions say should be blue if that makes a difference. Im on bt broadband, my laptop can pick it up as it has a built in wireless card, but i cant connect. I cant get through to technical support either.

    PLEASE HELP.

    Thanks
