When we got our dog, 12 years ago now! we put newspaper down in the room where his basket was, we stood him on it and kept saying 'wee wee poo poo' haha whenver he was about to wee, or often when he was weeing on the normal carpet we would lift him to the newspaper and he soon learnt to wee on the newspaper. We then moved the newspaper to the back door where he soon learnt to sit when he needed to go into the garden to do his business!
I feel so sorry for staffies, i usually see them owned by idiots and chavs. I used to live in manchester and was outside a corner shop one day and a woman and two kids came out and grabbed the staffie that was sat outside, it looked a bit thin and not in good condition, it saw a chicken bone on the street and went to eat it and the woman screamed obscenities at it, kicked it away from the bone and then yanked the lead closer to her. The kids looked like they got the same treatment....i often regret not following them home and reporting her.0 -
Ben is doing just fine now, but we still have a problem.
Ok now he is going outside to pee in the day and collecting lots of treats for doings so.
He still pee's and poo's in the house at night. I need to find a way to get this to stop.
My son is sometimes first up and this morning he slipped in a puddle a the bottom of the stairs. It was very upsetting seeing my 6 year old covered in dog pee. I ignored the ben but it was frustrating. I know its not his fault thats why I remaind calm. but I do need to take quick action. Maybe he has a problem holding is bladder?
We only leave out a very limited amount of water at night and his last feed is at 5pm.0 -
I would crate train the pup. If you're definitely keeping him, buy a 36" crate and encourage him into it to sleep etc.
There are lots of articles on the internet about crate training if you google it - tells you how to go about it etc. It'll housetrain him much quicker. Also, are you getting up one or two times in the night to let him out to the toilet? I'd pair getting a crate with letting him out a couple of times in the night to start with, then once, then he should be going all the way through. He's still only a wee mite at the moment so would certainly benefit from going out in the night, even if it's just once.
Plus, a crate gives a safe and secure haven for him, a den if you like, where he can go for peace and quiet or if he feels threatened.
Good luck

Like a child you will need to get up to him in the night and let him out - he will soon learn, it wont be forever.
My routine would be for any pups toilet training - last out at my bedtime - about 11pm. Then I would set the alarm for 3am - straight out to the garden, as few lights as possible - do the praise and straight back to bed - no other fussing at all. Honestly the less chances you give them for making mistakes the quicker it is they learn. I know its cold and I know its tiring getting up but it might only yake a week to 10 days before he cracks it. Just slowly ajust the time you set the alarm - 3 - then 3:15. 3;30 - till before you know it its a nice healthy 7am

He is beautiful! Well done.
He looks like a good dog, I can imagine how happy and grateful he must feel for someone offering him a nice home and a nice bowl of food. God Bless!0 -
well done for rescuing him. I have a 5 year old staffy and 3 children aged 10, 10 and 12. My Simba really is the most wonderful dog, he loves my kids and is just fantastic, it breaks my heart when i hear of the amount of staffs who are dumped, they really dont deserve the reputation they have. And as an earlier post stated they are only one of a handful of breeds recomended to be homed with children, mind you they dont always get along with other dogs, though you could probably say that about many breeds. good luck and let us know how you get onsave 10k by Dec 2009 10,000/ 3034.000

Congratulations on taking in a lovely staffie, and welcome to the staffie appreciation society!!!! I adore them they are a lovey breed and are usually great with kids. The trouble with staffies is that they are seen as the 'hardmans' dog and tend to get kicked around (info from a good friend who works for the RSPCA) and when they get fed up they just let them 'go'.
This is so unfair as they are a lovely breed known to be great with kids. My staffie is 2 and shes a real sweetheart.
Regarding toilettraining, ditto the crate, always control his space, they very rarely do their buisness in their own bed, so when you can't keep an eye on him put him into the crate. We also have a jack russel and couldnt house train her, but when we put her into the crate she stopped immmediatly.
Regarding trusting him with your son, i personally never leave my dogs unsupervised with my younger two aged 8 and 5, but my older two aged 13 and 12 are fine. again this is where the crate comes in, you can put the dog in there when you can't keep an eye on them both.
Well done you for taking in this lovely dog:A , i am sure you will reap your rewards from him.
SharronSometimes your the dog, and sometimes your the lampost..:p0
