  • Does anyone know if this is compatible with Windows98 first edition. I had to return an MP3 player I got for Christmas because it was Win98SE (although it said Win98 on outside of box). Also the one I had was a Logik and I couldnt download a driver from the site which was Sigmatel and I noticed in one of the postings that it was Sigmatel USB port or something. Have phoned a store and they are saving one but wanted to be sure before I make the journey over there.

presumably you'll be copying the files off it first ;)

Good post as I had been looking for one for a while. Got one in Somerfields Arbroath but the manager had to send for one. For those who can't get to a store which has them seemed a fairly easy task for the manager to get one brought in to a more local smaller store presumably on the delivery lorry as it only took about 5 hours. Can't seem to find the shuffle function though can any one help?

Menu > Settings > Repeat > Random or Random All (depending on what you want to shuffle through).

That puts it in shuffle mode. A little s will appear on the normal music screen when you've set it to shuffle.
In a rut? Can't get out? Don't know why?
It's time to make that change.

Make sure you have a good fiddle with the headphone in the socket- mine is cutting out and as it doesn't always recognise my sd disc I'll be returning it.

I checked the map....and realised Poplar Somerfield was alot closer than I thought... and as I had the motorbike today I called them up... reserved a few (I spoke to Michael) and then shot over.

Unfortunately they would only let me have a maximum of two because they had promised others to people like me that had called on the phone. They did not tell me how many they had left though.

The store is easy to get to though and there is a Car Park directly opposite with 2 hours free parking.

If you can speak to Michael first as he seems to be the person that is hold any stock of these.

I haven't tried mine yet... they do seem to be a bargain but I'll let you know once I use them.

Managed to get to the Whitley Bay Kwiksave (OP's place of purchase) to snaffle the last one...I had to ask over the counter for it tho.

Made up with it. Loaded my tunes on already and going to buy it a nice memory card.

    Thanks again.

  • That's probably why they had none left when I went at 12h40.......and my next door neighbours had bought 2 of the last 3 the day before.......Anyway, finally got mine from the Wallsend Hadrian Road store. They still have a few left. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone. xx
  • Just picked one up from the Wellington branch of Kwiksave in Telford. Think it was a display model but they checked all the bits were there against a unit that had been returned and all seemed fine. All working perfectly so far so very happy. Thanks to original poster for heads up.

Never really used mp3s before so I was hoping someone could answer a questions or two:

    1. I'm using dBpowerAMP Music Converter Release 10 to encode my CDs to mp3s. Is this the best free tool to use?

    2. I want the maximum quality possible when playing back so should I use mp3 or WMA?

    3. What's the difference between ID3 tag V1 and V2? (dBpowerAMP only seems to support V1)

    4. Is it worth upgrading/paying for the latest version of dBpowerAMP for extra benefits or would some other software be better if I'm going to pay?

    5. The tracks I have encoded so far were encoded at a constant 256kbps, presumably I can save memory by changing that to a variable bit rate - would the quality drop if I did this and would I save much memory?

    Thanks

    Haymish

To Haymish: Have you tried googling? ID3 provides an immediate very useful link.

WMA provides better quality per bit than MP3 (newer coder), but takes more decoding, so eats batteries more quickly. You really won't get a significant benefit from using such high bit rates.

My question is: how do these devices know which order to play the tracks? I only have experience of an older pen-type player which plays in the order which you load it with the files. It has two levels of selection: folder and file. Do these have an additional level for internal or external memory? Do they allow an arbitrary depth of folders?
Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.
