I know what your saying espresso.
I used to defend AVG myself, but just recently theyve become REALLY sloppy! Twice this year I had to reinstall AVG 8 just to get it to update properly, the scans are WAY too slow, my 2.2 Ghz XP computer struggles to run it........
And thats just me, ive heard of so many problems its unbelievable of late. Its why I changed to Avira

    Hi Guys
Not very good at this computer lark  but having real trouble at the mo.
I have difficulty getting onto MSE at the mo...seems to take loads of trying and then after 10 mins or so on the forums the Thank you button wont work and then everything seems to freeze.I have to shut the pages down and start all over again. Its driving me nuts.
Have been reading this thread over the last couple of days as I am running Vista basic with AVG 8.
    Have done a Cclear.
Is anyone else having trouble as I have no trouble on any other sites.
Any ideas would be appreciated....and later I may try to uninstall AVG and install Avira if you think this may help.
    Thanks.

Another false positive posted by Conor, as this problem only affected foreign versions of Windows XP. Let's think about this for a minute, how many critical security updates for Windows have M$ needed to patch and how long did it take them to release the necessary fixes? No software released is ever 100% perfect.

Correct, I have never knowingly ever had a problem with any version of AVG.

AVG aren't the first AV company to accidentally detect an important system file as infected and they won't be the last. After 2 decades in computers (god I'm getting old) I've seen all the big names do this.
It's an honest mistake and the person who made the honest mistake is no doubt unemployed as I write this.
Having said that AVG 8 is a bit pants (technical term) compared to 7.5 unless you have more than 1 or 2 Gb of RAM. It pages to the disk too much and uses too much CPU if you don't have large amounts of memory. It is less annoying in the popup "please buy the full version" dept compared to other free versions

Wrong. It affected ALL versions of XP. Do you honestly believe the words of the people who have made the cockup? It was reported by AMERICAN users first off.

    OH MY GOD:
    http://free.avg.com/download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition

    NO Downloads screening
    NO Realtime web page scanning.
    NO Instant Messaging Client screening.

So the free version doesn't even screen the most common methods of infection. Hope you feel nice and secure browsing websites.....

Even AVG themselves recommend caution when surfing using AVG Free:

    http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/191715/avg-antivirus-free-edition-80.html
However, keen not to cannibalise sales of its commercial product, AVG has warned that users should still surf cautiously, as the free package does not include the sandboxing feature that tests out unknown code in a secure environment.

I certainly do, I have never had a problem using AVG, so don't worry yourself too much, after all, you don't use it do you?

Been using my computer with no antivirus whatsoever and only windows firewall on. I perform a scan every now and then and never ever had any virus or malicious software. The only security software on my PC is Sandboxie with all the internet accessing software running from within. I clear the sandbox every so often and that is it. No one can convince me to install of any of this crap called antivirus on my computer.:p
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????

To be fair, sandboxie is a fantastic idea. But like linux, is NOT inpenetrable.
