Can anyone confirm the above advice? I also am running Vista Basic. I want to ditch AVG and try AVIRA but not if there are any potential issues with the changeover.

I installed Avira on a laptop running vista last weekend. I have limited computer ability and managed it easily. Managed to remove the free trial of macafee as well.

This weekends task is to remove AVG from my main desktop and install avira.

Download avira, then switch the internet off, then remove AVG, then install avira from the download, then switch the internet back on.

Should work fine. Though id personally check the PROGRAM LIST first (Which you use to find and run a program) to see if it has a built in AVG uninstaller program (I cant remember off the top of my head)

  • Just read this on the Register:
AVG, the popular anti-virus package, has falsely identified Adobe Flash as potentially malicious. The snafu comes just days after AVG slapped a bogus Trojan warning on a core Windows component.

    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/11/14/avg_false_positive_flash/

I followed links from that article to the article about the critical windows file and found a link (among the comments) from an AVG spokesman to this article:

    http://www.avg.com.au/index.cfm?section=news&feature=115

pointing out this problem didn't affect English versions of XP (doesn't make it right of course, but nonetheless).

I still use AVG on four PCs at home and this doesn't cheer me up. Who's to say that Avira won't make the same mistake tomorrow? We didn't think banks would go bust a year ago! (Get a mac; use Linux, blah blah... ;-)

I never had these problems with my ZX81. Oh for a bit of 'RAM wobble' being my main concern :-)

Another false positive posted by Conor, as this problem only affected foreign versions of Windows XP. Let's think about this for a minute, how many critical security updates for Windows have M$ needed to patch and how long did it take them to release the necessary fixes? No software released is ever 100% perfect.
