I have never done a gammon dry in the slow cooker, I usually stick it in (unwrapped) and cover it with a can of coke (full fat not diet! but stock or cider works well too) leave to cook for ~8 hours - delicious!0

no, I wouldn't put it in dry - especially as it'll be unattended for so long. As LE3 says, it is delicious cooked in cola - and cider too is lovely. Put it onto low as you'll be away so long.0

we had this sunday, it will be fine in dry you can either finish it off for 1/2 hour in the oven or have as is, it comes out reeeeaaaaally tender.0

mellymoo74 - the OP is leaving it for 12 hours., how long to you do it for?
Mind you, I suppose it also depends on how much fat is on it?0 -
I have to say, that although I often slow cook joints without liquid, I would not do this for gammon (accepting that mellymoo found it OK)
I wouldn't leave the cabbage in for that long either, if necessary I would stir-fry or steam it separately.0 -
Thanks all, I put it in as I had to leave for work, I put in about an inch of water just incase as was unsure. It is on low and will take some time to heat up so hopefully will be say 11 hours in there in essence.
I know when doing something like a curry or bolognese it is okay for that long due to the liquid content, just really unsure doing it dry for that long, not so bad when your at home or popping out and backin time to see how it is doing.
Well here goes anyway.0 -
Too late for this time, but what I do is plug the slow cooker into an electric timer ( the kind you would use for a lamp) so I can leave a joint on for about 7 hours0
