I do mine without any liquid. It's a small slow cooker, so not much space round the sides. It never dried out, actually, when I go to take it out there is always liquid in there, which sets as a jelly when cold.

My mum does hers with coke.
  • Probably a bit late now, but for another time....

I cook mine in cider, with parsnips and carrot plus red onion. Need about 250-300ml so also have cooks advantage of having to drink the left over from the bottle!

Makes the veg taste nice as well as the gammon :)

However, cooked mine too long in the slow cooker last time (we were out all day, longer than I thought) and we had "chunks" of it rather than slices:eek: Tasted OK but didn't look the prettiest.....

ETA - sorry, didn't seem Domino had mentioned cider too. oops!

  • Try doing it with cider...its good

I also bring mine to the boil in a saucepan first...tip away water (gets rid of some of salt) and take off outer skin of joint......then put in slow cooker with whatever liquid chosen

I've bought a slow cooker today and plan on using it tomorrow to cook a 2.5kg piece of ham. There's no mention of anything like that in the recipe leaflet so would I be right in thinking that if I soak it overnight then put in the slow cooker at breakfast time on low it should be done by teatime? And how much water would I add? And is there a slow cooker section on OS that I need to be looking at?
Pressure cooking has been my preferred method of cooking in the past so this is a completely new thing for me. Thanks.

I've gone for a big slow cooker - 5.7l with the thought that I can make stew/casserole/hotpot and then freeze portions for another time.

Soak the ham overnight and throw away the water and then put in some chopped onions and carrots and maybe some pearl barley and place the ham on top. Pour in water to come no more than half way up the ham.

You'll need to cook it for about 8 hours on low but it'll be OK it you need to leave it a bit longer.

    HTH.

I did Nigellas (?) diet coke ham in my slow cooker at Christmas and it was great. Can't link to the recipe atm but Google and it will be in loads of places. I actually used a bottle of lidl coke I had spare and left it on low overnight and it worked fine.

I just poke halved garlic cloves into the natural crevices of the joint, without any flavouring a slow cooked joint can taste bland.

    Rosemary sprigs also work well.

Like the idea of the rosemary, I'll try that, thanks.

I`ve used cola a few times, very good it was too but then I tried using apple juice, and I`ll stick with that from now on! Advantage to leaving on low overnight is it`s got all day to cool. Enjoy your slow cooker OP, it`s your new best friend!
