Cooking A Gammon Joint in the Slow Cooker

So I've put the ham, carrots, shallots and peppercorns in the slow cooker with a small carton of apple juice that I found in the fridge and topped up to halfway with water. I've put in on high for an hour or so to get it going then I'll turn it to low for the rest of the day. And keep my fingers crossed.
Planning to make pea and ham soup with the stock/leftover ham if all goes well.
Have also ordered six slow cooker books from the library!0 -
I LOVE ham cooked in the slow cooker. I just screw up some tinfoil and make it into a circle to stand the ham on so that it doesn't touch the bottom and leave it on low.
No water, nothing else..and it tastes wonderful !
OH, forgot - I do try to take the fat off.0 -

I bought a Gammon joint from Aldi and want to cook it in my slow cooker, but I'm not sure how to do this:o. Do I just put a couple of inches of water in the slow cooker and then just put the joint in? How do I know when it's cooked?:o0

How big is the joint, what is the wattage of your slow cooker & does it have high and low settings? For myself I am an optimist - there does not seem to be much use being anything else.

I like to soak it a while first to get rid of excess salt
Then as you say put it in with a bit of water
Cook 5hrs ish on high 8hrs ish on low
I always used to boil gammon joints but prefer cooking in sc now
The stock it produces is good for soup or dhal0 -
Thanks. Not sure of wattage, but it has low, med and high settings0

Well if it is a small joint = 800g. 3-4 hours on high or 6-7 hours on low. Turn the joint over half-way through cooking. No need to add water as there should be enough in the joint but you could cover the base of the cooker if you are worried. Alternatively to get a sweeter joint use cola, a spicier joint use ginger ale or the old favourite to pair with pork/ham use cider. As the other poster has stated the stock produced is good. For myself I am an optimist - there does not seem to be much use being anything else.

I've added this to our main thread on cooking a gammon joint in the slow cooker where you should find lots of advice.

Hi all, a little help if you would.
Ordered a bacon joint to do bacon and cabbage but they gave me a gammon roasting joint.
1. Can I use this even though the packaging says roasting?
2. I will be out of the house for 12 hours, would this be fine putting it in dry like I do with all joints and leaving it for 12 hours on low? Normally I am at home when I do joints so normally give them the 6-7 hours but unsure about 12 hours.
3. Does anyone put in cabbage say last 30 minutes? or any tips?
TIA0
