    I see you have the below things restricted;

    O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
    O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

    Did you set these within Windows Defender, in not then under take the following;

    Removal of lines

    1. Please re-open HiJackThis and choose do a system scan only. Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - !!7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Companion\Installs\cpn\yt.dll (file missing)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
    O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
    O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

    Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, including browsers, so that nothing other than HijackThis is open, then click Fix Checked. A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES. Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis. Now reboot your machine.

    Otherwise in the quick look I've had all looks ok.

    Thanks for that - have done that and this is the new log:

    Will go and attend to the Java update now and get back.

    Many thanks for this btw, I am totally hopeless usually with these things - but the help on here gave me the confidence to try:o

    Okay! Have done what you told me in post 10! So I have java 6 installed now:D and have got rid of the old ones! I usually have automatic updates allowed on this - but BIL had told me not to download anything until he had been because last time I did I could not get into Windows:o . He is so busy at the mo - so I was worried about my system. Am much happier with how it is running now - still a bit sort of jumpy - but apart from signing in to IE or MSE from desktop it is running much faster:D .

    Many, many thanks for your help on this - you gave me the confidence to try to sort things out for myself instead of remaining terrified of the wee beastie!

    Do I need to have any other protection than AVG? And, at risk of being inundated with loads of posts with everyone offering their favourites, can you suggest a good spam blocker as I am totally fed up with it?

    I've seen too many threads from infected AVG users, of which you may be one (if malwarebytes found something other than cookies). The other 2 free alternatives are Avast and Antivir.

    The link is Kaspersky's scanner, just click on the bar at the top, and download file

    I used to have avast as well as avg actually - BIL put them on, and I think he removed avast last time I got into problems - will ask him about this and see why. Many thanks.

    Usually yes: but turned these off because I had downloaded some updates a while back and then could not get in to Windows, BIL said not to do any more downloads until he had had time to have a look......but is very busy at the moment so I decided to try and sort things out myself - with the kind help of the techie crew here:D .

    Thank you very much for your help, it really is much appreciated and the puter is running much better now.

    You must NEVER use 2 RESIDENT scanners at the same time
    Its AVIRA OR AVAST OR AVG, never together
    (Avira is my choice)

    you also need spyware protection - I recommend spyware doctor (the free edition) for real-time and scanned protection, and spybot search & destroy (for it's immunise facility and the startup tool) available from www.majorgeeks.com under anti-spyware. Definitely keep MBAM, and also get CCleaner for cleaning up those nasty temp files where lots of bad stuff can hang out :)

    oh, and for waht it's worth, I'd go for avast antivirus, as it has an e-mail scanner built-in.

    ...and, just a thought, are we overlooking something very obvious in terms of performance...moggy, what spec is your pc, in terms of processor, RAM, etc??

    Oh lord! Now you are asking really technical questions! I know that it is an HP:o :rotfl:

    Seriously though - I just went and looked all this up (:o ) it is an HP Pavilion, with an AMD Athlon 64 Processor, 3400+ (and I do not have a clue what that means:o ) and 1.00 GB of RAM.

    Thanks for the advice regarding spyware- will definitely have to have a look at this - but would also like something to kill all spammers:D

    Thanks for replying. Why would AVG not be any good?

    I spent all of Sunday evening removing stuff off a PC that AVG had let through.
