PC help please - have run malwarebytes - what next

Hi, have been having some trouble with my pc for some time, running slow, jumping about and mouse not responding. Was waiting for BIL to come and clean it up for me - but read the help you gave to crystal9 the other evening and decided to give it a go myself (about time I tried learning some new technology:D ).

So, I have run Malwarebytes, removed the infected stuff that it found (which was an alarming number but I think many of them were just tracking cookies) and rebooted.

Have done a hijack this log (but cannot work out how to post it here:o ) and want to know what to do next and whether I have anything else on the puter that I need to deal with.

Many thanks for any help you can offer.

  • I see you have the below things restricted;

    O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
    O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

    Did you set these within Windows Defender, in not then under take the following;

    Removal of lines

    1. Please re-open HiJackThis and choose do a system scan only. Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - !!7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Companion\Installs\cpn\yt.dll (file missing)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
    O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
    O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, including browsers, so that nothing other than HijackThis is open, then click Fix Checked. A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES. Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis. Now reboot your machine.

Otherwise in the quick look I've had all looks ok.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
    1. Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version6 and save it to your desktop.
    2. Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)6 Update 10...allows end-users to run Java applications".
    3. Click the "Download" button to the right.
    4. Select your Platform: "Windows".
    5. Select your Language: "Multi-Language".
    6. Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
    7. Click Continue and the page will refresh.
    8. Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
    9. Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    10. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
    11. Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    12. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    13. Follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
    14. Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
    15. Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    16. Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u10-windows-i586-p.exe
    17. Follow the on screen instructions to install the latest Java version.

relying on AVG is quite scary ;)

you are still on service pack 2 for some reason

Try this for an independent check

Thanks for replying. Why would AVG not be any good? I'm afraid that it seems everyone has their own "pet" protection, and that no two people ever seem able to agree on this - but this was the one my BIL suggested.

My computer will not let me download the above link for security reasons.
